So, the summer semester at Uni-Freiburg finally started on Monday May 2nd :)
Here's a quick rundown of my classes this semester (before I finally update about the rest of my travels over break):
"Literatur der Jahrtausendwende" --> Literature of the turn of the Millennium (in Germany). So far we've read Der Vorleser, which is also well known in English, particularly because of the recent movie (The Reader with Kate Winslet), and right now we're nearly finished with a second book, Am Beispiel Meines Bruders (with my brother's example), which I actually like better, mostly for the style. But so far, every class period we've had the same discussion, about how everyone in Germany felt guilty for what was done in WWII and no one knew how to deal with it. We've had that same discussion at least 5 times, and we've only had class 8 times. I can't wait til we move on with a new topic...
"Die Europäische Union" --> The European Union. Um. We learn about the EU. I have a Referat tomorrow over the Europäischer Gerichtshof, or the European Court of Justice.. it's kind of boring (the institution). But the class is just lovely, and I'm learning a lot of relevant things. Oh, and France basically is really whiny.. about everything.
"Deutsch und Englisch: Zwei ungleiche Brüder" --> German and English: two unlike brothers. Probably my favorite class, content-wise. Pretty much we compare German and English. Old English is crazy. But it's making me rethink my choice of taking "History of the English Language" at Iowa next semester... Maybe I can work something out with my worthless Advisor (I'm sure she's a great professor... but a terrible academic advisor). Also, this is my only legit Uni course this semester.
"That one class at the IH" --> I'm also taking another grammar course at the International Haus, only this time it was optional. Probably my most useful in the long run, plus the teacher is super nice (I've had her for all 3 IH courses haha) :)
So... yup! That's what I'm taking this semester. I initially thought I might take a lecture at the Uni too, but it cut into my eating time on Wednesdays, by making my entire 2 hour break between classes disappear, so I'm not taking it. Plus I'd probably have to write a Hausarbeit at the end to get credit anyways, so no big loss.
