I find it fascinating and melancholic seeing that out of the Festum 4, those who gradually learn to be more human as the story progresses (or re-learn about humanity) are the ones to die and while at least be reborn, it feels like seeing them be robbed of their potential: Kurusu settling on the island to live among humans and having a parent, Soushi reconnecting with Kazuki and friends. I get that they had 4-5 years to experience all that but still

Meanwhile, those who go the other direction (losing their humanity day-by-day) are the ones who survived toward the end. But there's a sense of feeling that they're also the ones "left behind": from the aftermath of war (a byproduct of the war even), left behind by their loved ones (Shoko for Kouyou and Soushi for Kazuki) and I couldn't help reading the bit where they depart the island as "oh, I'd love to stay and rebuild the island. But for now this isn't the place for me" it's hard to explain this part but there's this feeling that they weren't able to fully partake in the celebration of the re-taking of the island. Thus they leave, now the ones "leaving behind" their past as humans on the island. Oh gosh I hope that makes sense

The four Festum boys are my favorite characters, and I agree, there is a lot of meaning in what happens to them in The Beyond. Kazuki, Soushi, Kōyō, and Kurusu are very similar to each other because of their experiences with both existence and nothingness, or having experienced being both human and Festum.

I like how the themes from Dead Aggressor are still important in The Beyond. From the beginning, Kazuki could tell that war would change him and he didn't want who he used to be to be forgotten. Maya has always been the person tasked with remembering how everyone and the island used to be, as tragic as that is for her. Even though everything in her world has either been lost or changed forever, throughout the series she still remembers and reminds the others of how things used to be. But that also means she is probably constantly mourning the past while also trying to build a brighter future, even though the future she originally hoped for will never happen. I think the fact that she realizes this is why she can't ask Kazuki to stay on the island. But it is also her connection to the past that makes her unable to leave the island with Kazuki. Maya has to stay behind and protect their home.

Kazuki and Kōyō are the two who have changed so much over the course of the series they are more Festum than human. In order to protect everyone, they had to sacrifice so much of themselves and become so assimilated with the Mir that they can no longer belong on the island the way they used to. It's ironic that the people who sacrificed the most for peace are the ones who are unable to really enjoy it in the end. Even though the island is still their home, they would rather leave and see the world rather than stay and rebuild. But Soushi and Kurusu are kind of the opposite. The human Soushi doesn't exist anymore, but the new Soushi who originally sided with the Festum has become far more human than Kazuki. And Kurusu, a Festum who has always been interested in humans, was reborn to be raised by Hazama Yōko. Neither of their existences would have naturally occurred on the island without the Festum or Mir making it possible. But in the end, they are the ones who stay on the island to rebuild everything and to keep their culture and peace alive. It's the opposite of Dead Aggressor, where Soushi was the one involved with the war and had left the island while Kazuki didn't know about the outside world and wanted to see what Soushi had seen. This time, when Kazuki leaves the island, it is Soushi who stays behind and waits for Kazuki to come back and tell him about the outside world. (Ubukata revealed here that the last words Soushi says in the anime are 「世界を見て回ったら、また真実を教えに来い」, "Once you've seen the world, come back and tell me the truth!")

In a way, I think it shows how much existence and nothingness, humans and Festum, have merged and assimilated into each other. Both sides have learned to understand each other, which was the goal from the beginning. It was through understanding each other that they were able to coexist with the other side and not try to annihilate each other.

One of the things that sadden me (among many tragedies else) is that Kazuki and Koyo told Kurusu that they would be there with him when he died, but it the end, they did not.

And I'm not saying this to criticize the ending whatsoever (I love that Kazuki and especially Koyo decided on a world tour), but well. Upon hearing that, I kinda expected Koyo and Kazuki to 'die' when Kurusu was gone, so I was a little bumped out when it turned out that they didn't. It certainly did not help that the Festum trio hold a special place in my heart. I just love them together lol they're kinda funny.

I also think Kurusu would be very happy to go on a world tour with Kazuki and Koyo too. He likes the sky, after all. How pretty of a scenario would it be.

MAD OP - Fafner Movie Opening

This fanvid of the fafner heaven and earth movie is pretty great and I haven’t stop replaying it since I discovered it a few days ago and it’s styled like it’s an OP for a fafner heaven and earth anime *series* which kinda makes me wish HAE was at least a cour long instead of just a two-hour long... /cries

Highlights:

Kazuki’s face at 0:07

Kazuki and Kurusu are the main leads

like the main focus is all about Kazuki and Kurusu’s relationship

soushi is treated like Kazuki’s long lost missing sweetheart whom Kazuki just can’t move on from and whose memories keep Kazuki going

...which is totally true now that I think about it

the point is that when I was watching HAE movie, I was expecting Kazuki and Soushi’s relationship progression and that was what I focused on which made me overlook everything else, including Kurusu despite him having plenty screentime and his own unexpected  interesting background and subplot.

also WHAT is even Kazuki’s face at 0:07

I watched HAE movie often enough to remember he had no this specific face expression in it.

plenty of kazuki ‘sadfacing and making you want to hug him and comfort him and protect him from everything’ scenes but NOT this specific sad face.

or at the very least all the Kurusu is the Soushi/Kazuki #1 fan (after Maya, who is the president of the sou/kazu fanclub)

look, kurusu gave soushi a body and healed kazuki’s eyesight so that they both could gaze at the pretty blue sky together.

he also kept soushi’s consciousness safe within him for two years just bcs it seemed *interesting*

kurusu also defied his Mir, his *god*, just to keep kazuki from disappearing

if you watch Exodus right after the 1st season, you’d never guess kazuki is totally, completely, NOT alright in between, or at least during those two years where soushi’s gone.

but then again he’s always in ‘crossing’ with soushi during those two years, completely unaware it’s all real and NOT only his own hallucination for missing soushi so I guess it’s understandable for him to be a little messed up ;___;
