NATHANIEL’S STORY

Nathaniel had always been the child people were intimidated by, all his life growing up, he was singled out and sometimes that was just because of rumors that went around in school about him; when he was little, everyone branded him as a bully and in high school, he still carried that label, but outsiders read his appearance as being nothing more than a thug that was out to cause mayhem. There were two sides to every story and everyone knew all sides but his; he didn’t bully people, but he did take care of people in ways that weren’t completely family friendly. He was a protector, growing up there was always that one kid on their own who took his attention over everyone else, and it wasn’t because they were weak or vulnerable, it was because they were alone and they had nobody; Nathaniel wanted to be their somebody. The other sides to all of those stories about Nathaniel were always about him trying to protect those who he saw were vulnerable and needed someone to stand up for them. His intentions were never malice, but that was something nobody but those he helped knew.

He was a secretive person, everyone knew that, but the reasons why were things nobody knew; nobody knew how terrified he was about being seen differently, nobody knew how much he actually hated himself and nobody knew how much hurt he’s felt ever since his birth mother told him she wanted nothing to do with him; that he was of no existence to her even though his fathers were more than accepting about her being in his life if it was what they both wanted or needed. Those were things he never let anyone know and as soon as he started at McKinley, he knew he never would let his secrets be known, especially the one about his sexuality. He’s only ever dated the girls every good looking guy or jock would date; they consisted in blondes, cheerleaders and they were usually far from innocent, which was why Nathaniel was never one of those Glee Club kids that got a Slushie in his face, because even though he liked to sing and dance on occasion, he fit in with everyone on the football team, he was heavily interested in sport and all it took was him to give you one dirty look for you to go crawling back into your hiding place. Yes, Nathaniel Berry seemed like he had it all, he got the girls, the grades and the friends, but he didn’t have the happiness or confidence in himself, which was probably why he relied on trying to protect so many others. He just didn’t know how to protect himself.

Moving to Maryland after his Graduation had always been something he wanted to do, he wanted to be a Cardiologists, one of the best if possible. He thought being somewhere completely different away from all those familiar faces would free him from his fear of being seen with a guy, but it just made things worse. And instead of confronting his problems, he pushed people away and started to sleep around with as many girls on campus as possible, almost like a desperate attempt to protect his masculinity. He didn’t have many friends at University, but he had his reputation protected and that was all that mattered to him. If only he realized just how much positivity being honest with himself and others would bring him.
