June is National Dairy Month

To commemorate National Dairy Month we are showing a farm to table progression of a glass of milk. The first three images, from the 1910s, come from the Roman B.J. Kwasniewski Photographs and can be accessed through the Milwaukee Polonia digital collection. The last photograph is from the James Blair Murdoch Photograph Collection, it is dated 1938 and shows Mr. and Mrs. Edw. Maske enjoying their milk. This photograph can be accessed through our digital collections.

National Lighthouse Day

August 7, 1789, the United States Lighthouse Establishment Act was approved by Congress. The law gave the federal government ownership and responsibility of all lighthouses in the United States. On the 200th Anniversary of the signing of this act, Congress designated August 7 National Lighthouse Day.

Having coastline on two Great Lakes, Wisconsin has many lighthouses, some are still active others are now open for tourists to visit.

From top to bottom are The Kevitch Light in Grafton, The Old Kenosha Light in Kenosha, The Fond du Lac Light in Fond du Lac, and two images of the North  Point Lighthouse in Milwaukee.

The last image is of a member of the United States Lighthouse Service. The USLHS was active from 1910 to 1939 when it then became part of the United States Coast Guard.

The color photographs come from the John P. Otis Photographs, 1970-1995 (UWM MSS 160, box 3). The black and white photo of the North Point Lighthouse comes from the L. J. Kunstbeck Photographs, 1947-1948 (UWM MSS 187). The “Portrait of U. S. Lighthouse Service member” comes from the Roman B. J. Kwasniewski Photographs and can be accessed through our digital collection titled Milwaukee Polonia.

National Bratwurst Day

It’s August 16, and we couldn’t pass up commemorating the flavorful, meaty treat, the bratwurst. The German sausage known as bratwurst or simply brat is a staple of Wisconsin festivals, sporting events, and backyard cookouts. Milwaukee is home to the long-time sausage producers Usinger and Klement’s.

The above images are the interior of the South Side Sausage Company. You can see the cases are well stocked, and the staff are ready and waiting to supply their customers with the day's fresh sausages. The South Side Sausage company operated from 1711 W. Mitchell Street in Milwaukee. The photos were taken on August 11, 1939, by Roman B. J. Kwasniewski.

International Cat Day 2019

Here is an artsy double exposure photograph from Roman B. J. Kwasniewski. One image is a man with a dog, cat, and an automobile. The other image is a woman standing and holding a cat.

Roman Kwasniewski (1886-1980) was born in Chicago. Roman and his family moved to Milwaukee in 1890. He attended Milwaukee Schools including South Division High School and Marquette University. He opened his photography studio, Park Studio in 1913. He closed the studio in the mid-1940s.
