Auntie Laura rings up and says she would like to try Sim’s Kitchen. So Uncle drives her there, very well aware of the speed camera on Hillsborough Rd that rewarded him with a $80 speed infringement, on the Fiat 500 that’s barely a racing car. We had a sample of some the favourite dishes Uncle Kenny & Aunty Doris prepared with considerable aplomb. • Kway Teow Soup, with fish balls, fish slices and chicken strips, topped with lettuce and deep fried shallots. • Beehoon Goreng, fried rice vermicelli resplendent with wok hei; beansprouts, egg, spring onion & chicken make this very sedap. • fried chicken with chilli dip. Say no more! • Hainanese Chicken Rice, the poached chicken was cooked to HCR requirements and the chilli sauce had ginger and garlic. Aunty Laura could not even give Uncle 15 secs for a photo as she was eager to makan; when she finished she pronounced it was good. She should know as she’s an accomplished cook herself. • Aunty ordered 2 Nasi Lemak bungkus to take out. The bungkus is so common in kopitiams in Malaysia and is a mini Nasi Lemak wrapped in banana leaf. Lemak rice is topped with sambal, peanuts, ikan bilis, topped with a hard boiled egg. Perfect for breakfast or lunch. Aunty Laura is impressed.
