KDRAMA WOMEN’S WEEK - Day 1: Doubles/Foils Hong Cha Young & Choi Myung Hee
“I don’t even have to lift a finger to snap your neck like a twig.” “Thank you for motivating me.”
#KDRAMAWOMENSWEEK | March 15th-22nd 2021
Hey everyone!! Yes, it is this time of the year once again. To celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re going to spend eight days talking about and celebrating women in kdramas.
The prompts below were written by me, @dramaheroine. Special thank yous go to @kdramanetwork and @kdramaspace for creating the gifs and for the valuable support and @gudongmae for the vital help and feedback.
Tag your posts #kdramawomensweek and #kww2021 so they are easier to find, admire and reblog. If you have any questions/concerns, contact @dramaheroine, @kdramanetwork and @kdramaspace.
Posts can be gifs, photos, videos, audio, text posts, fanfic, or another form of edited content. If your post includes non-original work (so if you did not make it yourself), please credit the content creator.
Feel free to draw from drama classics, unknown gems or hyper-popular hits or shows that are currently airing. All K-dramas are welcome. Also “women” here is inclusive of non-binary folk, trans women, etc. We are very excited to see what this year’s creations will be!
March 15th. Day One: “Doubles/Foils”
Female characters who mirror each other in a major way such as (secret) twins or women with the same name or appearance or two female characters in the same K-drama who are written to be the foil to each other (a character who is made to be the opposite of a main character to highlight qualities of a main character).
March 16th. Day Two: “The Other Woman”
This prompt is all about the female characters who are “the other woman” in a relationship or act as an obstacle to an existing relationship in some way. Perhaps you can choose a female character who is the mistress, the unlucky-in-love, pining second female lead, the romanticised first love, the dead ex-girlfriend/wife, the male lead’s dream girl that he does not end up with or the neglected, ignored wife/fiance.
March 17th. Day Three: “Writer's Toolbox”
Inspired by the Toast’s How To Tell If You’re In a Novel series, complete the following sentence: “If I was the heroine in a (BLANK) drama, I would....” The blank can be any K-drama writer you choose or possibly a director or genre. Think of the common traits and characteristics that your favourite writer/genre/director’s female characters have. Create as long a list as you like. Have fun!
March 18th. Day Four: “All the Weirdos and Loners”
This is for the female characters who spend a lot of time alone, who are highly introverted, who are outsiders within their respective communities, who are considered to be strange or weird by the vast majority of the other characters or who remain single by choice at the end of the show. Let’s celebrate the unconventional, unusual, independent and ordinary yet extraordinary k-drama ladies breaking kdrama heroine conventions here.
March 19th. Day Five: “Catering to Me”
Think of a drama with a female Kdrama director (rare but they exist). Find a scene/moment in that K-drama that was for you a display of “the female gaze”. The female gaze has many definitions but for this, I would define it as a scene/moment that for you where it is clear that it was crafted by a woman and provides insight into the lived female experience. This could be about the point of view or angle the scene takes, the way that the scene is shot/framed, what the director places emphasis on, what they left in or left out or just how a female character is treated in that moment.
March 20th. Day Six: “Queen of Rom-coms”
Actresses who have built their careers around starring in romantic comedies, the oft-maligned, traditionally female-centric genre. You can highlight the variety of characters that they have been able to play in a rom-com. Alternatively, celebrate all of your favourite K-drama romantic comedy heroines and tell us why you love them so much.
March 21st. Day Seven: “Emotional Support Character”
It has been and still remains an incredibly difficult time for all of us under this pandemic. This prompt is dedicated to female characters who struggle with their mental health (subtext or text) and have resonated with you or female characters who have been comforting or inspiring to you recently.
March 22nd. Day Eight: “A Moment of Peace and A Moment of Tenderness”
Finally, female characters who find peace within themselves by the end of the story or finally are just able to relax and rest after much struggle. Alternatively, choose your favourite moment(s) or acts of tenderness, warmth and care between female characters.
Day Three: “Writer's Toolbox”
If I was the heroine in a historical drama, I would have a quiet resolve.
Dong Dong Joo from The Tale of Nokdu, Hong Shim/Yoon Yi Seo from 100 Days my Prince, and Ae Shin from Mr. Sunshine
Women in historical dramas can be loud at times, but their resolve is quiet.
It asks none for approval.
It demands no glory.
It refuses to be ignored only by the women themselves.
Day Three: “Writer’s Toolbox” | If I were in a Lee Woo Jung drama...
Day Eight: “A Moment of Peace and A Moment of Tenderness”
Oh Dong Baek & Deok Sun from When the Camellia Blooms
Deok Sun: "You need to live your life. Your own life. Forget about Pil Gu or Deok Sun."
Dong Baek: "Why are you giving up already even before you try to be mean?"
Deok Sun: "If you two decide to break up, that's your business. But if you will end up coming to me, I will embrace you very fondly. Very fondly."
Dong Baek: "Yong Shik must be so warm-hearted because he took after you, Ms. Kwak."
Deok Sun: "Of course, my son is bound to take after me. And of course you're meant to fall for him."
Day Five: “Catering to Me”
Im Sun Rye directing Little Forest (a Kmovie)
I love how she made the food look delicious and made it look like the actress was enjoying the food while maintaining the humanness of the female character. In other words, not amplifying sex appeal and minimizing other character traits in order to make the food look good. The character doesn't eat daintily, but her eating isn't exaggerated either -- it's refreshingly realistic. We see the main character focus on her food, but still sometimes be distracted by her thoughts or things going on around her. Also, she enjoys the food but also can experience other emotions at the same time (especially when she thinks of her mom). There's a whimsical aspect to the way it's filmed and at the same time it's very down to earth which fits perfectly with the story.
Just for contrast, here's part of a scene from a food-centric show (Let's Eat!) that was directed by a man.
Day Four: “All the Weirdoes and Lovers” | Hong Cha Young from Vincenzo
