A new show from WNET Interactive Engagement Group and PBS Digital Studios about gender identity, sexuality and queer community. Hosted by Kristin Russo of Ev...
A really cool web series brought to you by PBS about gender and sexuality. This show explores the queer spectrum and all of its different intersectionalities across the spectrum.
12 young adults with diverse gender identities celebrate the freedom of a prom with no dress code.
This is oh so very spectacular.
“For high schoolers who don’t fit into the traditional gender binary, prom can be a painful and sometimes traumatizing experience. Some students are told they can’t wear the clothes they want or bring the date they’re attracted to. Others are just told they should stay home because they don’t belong. But if prom is supposed to be a celebration of personal achievement and new beginnings, why should any student be made to feel like they can’t attend?”
MTV is taking the initiative during prom season to show a relfection of the queer community in the media, so students who do not conform to the gender binary feel more comfortable at a space such as prom. Also one of the couples featured, Tiq and Kim, were just at NYU LGBTQ Center’s Moving Up Day. Tiq was the keynote speaker.
We have chosen the following page because the simplicity conveys a lot in this case. At the beginning the panel shows all three characters interacting with one another, but as the story progresses the panels focus solely on Groot and the bartender. The three middle panels show Groot with the same facial expression while the bartender concocts a beverage for him and does all the action and speaking, which is kept to a minimal. The minimalistic aspect gives it a comic quality and still conveys the whole story. Finally, the last panel pans out to the whole bar to reveal the expression of those around him after the conflict between Groot and the bartender. This page is a great example of how the expressions of characters can convey a lot and a lot of text is not needed to tell a story.
The nominees for the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards, presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
The problem of diversity in entertainment we watch is present in all facets, not just on the screen. This year, the Tony awards, only nominated one person of color, out of all of the awards. People discussed that Oscars were some of the whitest in history, however, the “great white way” is also some of the whitests its ever been. People have argued, that’s just the way theater is and has been, but that is no excuse. Theater is supposed to be a representation of the real world happening in front of you, and if we white wash it, it is completely and falsely representing the world we live in. It is a necessity that we start to make art more inclusive.
The Whiteness Project is an interactive investigation into how Americans who identify as “white” experience their ethnicity.
The two leads in MTV's "Faking It" spent Season 1 pretending to be lesbians. Now they've been joined by an intersex character.
On the show Faking It on MTV, they explore sexuality and relationships. But the most ground breaking aspect of the show is the introduction of the a character who is intersex. According to the Intersex Society of North America, being intersex means being "born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male.” This inclusivity is ground breaking because it is something that has never been included in a character in mainstream media and is often overlooked. People aren’t often educated on what being intersex means. I don’t watch the show, but I am curious to see how the situation of the intersex character, Lauren, is handled.
This is an analysis of the television show, The L Word.
The L Word is a show which many people have formulated strong opinions about. I think this critique of the show bring up the important point that though it seemed ground break that it was representing a marginalized group of people, it was very homogenous in its nature in that it was very white. In addition, it made everyone appear to belong in the same socioeconomic class regardless of their job status. Sometimes the concern of money was brought up, but it never seemed to effect them in their living.
