Keanu loved working at the smoke shop. This was the first job he’s ever had where he actually was enthused about what he was selling and got to hang out with likeminded people all day. It didn’t pay much but he lived a relatively cheap lifestyle considering the various vices he managed. His shift had gone by incredibly fast today and that was greatly due to the fact he had plans after work. He was hanging out with Kylee again and he was looking forward to it.

He’d always thought she was cool especially considering she hung out in the same circles he did but when he got a job at the shop he saw her on a regular basis as a customer was when he really got to know her and eventually managed to grab her phone number. Today was the first time the two of them were actually going to hang out one on one that he could recall in the long history he’s known her. They didn’t have big plans other than to smoke over at Kylee’s place but that beat smoking at home by himself which he would’ve done otherwise when he got off. It was convenient she lived in the same apartment building as him so he didn’t have to head far to see her.

Keanu freshened up some after work before he headed over to her place. He knocked on her door and smiled when he saw her. “Hey, how’s it hanging?” he greeted her already letting himself into the apartment. “I got you something from the shop today,” he began as he kicked off his shoes and began fumbling in his bag for the item he was looking for.

Keanu looked forward to the 4th of July every year. It was one of his favorite holidays. He loved barbecues, parties, and especially fireworks. And being just a little over a month before his birthday the holiday always marked the unofficial start of Keanu’s birthday season. Being a regular at Sharky’s there was no way he would be missing the biggest event they put on all year no matter what and he was excited to have a date this year.

He’d been spending an awful lot of time with Kylee these days. The two of them just seemed to click and he was thoroughly enjoying exploring his connection with her. This 4th of July was a special one because it was going to be his first official date with Kylee. Up until this point the pair had spent most of their time alternating hanging out in each other’s apartments which was fine by Keanu but hadn’t ever constituted a date. That was why Keanu was putting in the effort tonight from his outfit to his wallet, tapping into some of his rain day fund so he could buy Kylee whatever drinks she wanted tonight.

So far the night had been a success. They’d been at Sharky’s for a few hours drinking and running into friends and simply having a good time despite not getting much of a chance to be alone. The night was still young and as dusk began to fall and murmurs of the fireworks beginning to start Keanu pulled Kylee away from the current group of friends they’d been socializing with.

Holding her hand Keanu led her towards the beach and nearly tripped in a dip in the sand. “Fuck,” he laughed. He was definitely drunk at this point and he was thoroughly enjoying himself. “I know the perfect spot, it’s not far,” he promised. While Keanu could easily hang out at Sharky’s until bar close, he had Kylee with him tonight and he wanted to find somewhere more secluded for them to enjoy tonight’s fireworks show.

Keanu’s birthday had been good so far. He’d spent the night at Kylee’s because she was really the only one he wanted to spend his birthday with this year and so far there’d been no complaints from Keanu. He didn’t have to work for the next couple of days so he was just enjoying having the free time even if they hadn’t gotten up to anything that exciting yet. It’d been a few years since he’d thrown a proper birthday party for himself and twenty-six wasn’t going to be one of those years either.

“Uh huh… yes, mhm. Yeah… alright mom, I gotta go…. No seriously I got to go… I love you too, bye,” Keanu could be heard on the phone with his mother as he sat on Kylee’s couch. He’d been receiving messages all day for his birthday and today was one of the few days he wasn’t annoyed at his phone blowing up. Keanu put his phone away as he reached for Kylee’s bong so he could take a rip. He’d been smoking and drinking since this morning so he certainly had a birthday buzz going.

Keanu exhaled the smoke with a cough having taken a bigger hit than he anticipated but he found himself laughing as he came out of the coughing fit. “Man, my mom loves to talk,” he informed Kylee. “I’m glad my grandmother was out otherwise I’d still be on the phone,” he explained. He loved the women who raised him dearly and he felt he owed it to his mom to talk to her on his birthday for a while. After all he wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her.

“So, what now?” Keanu asked. Even though it was his birthday he’d kind of left the planning of the festivities up to his girlfriend and he didn’t expect her to go wild. They had only been dating for a little over a month now after all.
