Meet Kyll! One of the DDs from Schrod's squad. Unlike Schrod, he CAN go into kill mode. Actually... He may spend to much time in kill mode. As in he almost is never out of it haha!

Toxic pokeweed root dye (kyll) update: I have obtained all of the necessary materials to cook some up!
A cutting board, knives, tongs, and pots that will never again touch food (a big dye pot was last on my list). I also got a portable hot plate so I don't have to worry about keeping my kitchen safe and can cook in the garage. I have the old, now-dried, pokeweed roots, and have just dug another half dozen fresh roots that I actually WASHED. (Yeah I didn't wash the others. Oops.)
I'm gonna cut up the fresh roots to boil tonight and see if I can get a dye from them! Good news or bad news, it looks like I won't ever run out of pokeweed on this property.
The roots I got today are quite young and small. I'll be curious if young roots and more mature roots are different.

Kyll update: WE'RE COOKIN!
I set up a little workstation in the garage with a portable electric burner, folding table, scrap of wood to protect the table from heat, and my thrift shop cookware.
I chopped some pokeweed roots semi-fine. I want to say these are about half inch chunks, maybe a little smaller. The small roots I just snipped with my garden shears and they cut like a dream. The larger roots were a pain in the ass. My little knives couldnt even cut through them. They're not hard like a carrot and won't really SNAP, about as soft as a potato but much more fibrous. I think I used a pound or so of roots.
My thrifted pot has a nice pasta strainer insert. So I put the chopped roots in there, covered them with water, and set the heat to high. Sources indicate that as they boil, they will turn purple (or red?). The water is heating as I write up this post. We shall see.
