The house on the northern ridge was grand and quiet. Charcoal burned constantly in the iron braziers scattered through the corridors, keeping the physical cold at bay, but a steady silence clung to the rooms all the same. In your father’s household, warmth was never a matter of temperature. As the Ice Pillar, he ran his life with a strict, distant discipline, and he expected nothing less from his family.
There was no joy when the marriage was brought up—only logic. Blending the sharp, precise footwork of Ice Breathing with the heavy, forward momentum of the Rengoku line was meant to strengthen the Corps’ standing for the next generation. Your father laid it out over quiet morning meals in short, matter-of-fact sentences, treating the match like a necessary arrangement. You were the foundation; Kyojuro Rengoku was to be the fire that sealed it.
The evening before you left, the main house was still. Outside, autumn wind swept pine needles across the flagstones.
You sat on the floor in your room, watching the wick inside the oil lamp flicker against the paper screen.
When your mother stepped inside, her feet made barely a sound on the mats. She carried a small package wrapped in indigo cloth, her face calm in the way women of your family were taught to keep themselves. Yet, as she laid the bundle down on the floor, her fingers stayed on the knot a second longer than they needed to.
"Your father wants you to know what is expected," she said softly, her voice flat. "A bride from this house shouldn't look confused or caught off guard before her husband."
She didn't stay to discuss it. She got back up with a light rustle of her sash and walked out, leaving the door open just an inch.
Untying the cloth, you found a hand-bound book held together with dark thread and thick, textured paper. Opening it under the yellow light of the lamp, a dull tightness settled in your chest.
It was a book of shunga—woodblock prints done in black ink and faint washes of color. The drawings were plain and unmistakable. Men and women were caught in quiet, unhurried moments together on futons: robes pulled open, legs tangled, skin pressed together. The prints showed the actual mechanics of marriage without trying to disguise them—the heavy weight of a man's frame, the bare exposure of a woman's thighs, and the blunt reality of what was supposed to happen once the doors were shut.
A sudden heat crept up your neck, burning against your face. You turned a couple of pages, your thumb catching on the rough edge of the paper, then closed the cover with a dull thud. You tucked it under the bottom drawer of your chest, out of sight, though the images stayed stuck in your head.
You lay down under the blankets later, but you didn't sleep much. You lay on your back staring up at the dark wooden ceiling, listening to the wind outside and feeling a slow, heavy knot of nerves sit in your stomach.
Morning came grey and slow.
Getting ready took hours. Maidservants washed your skin with warm water, combed camellia oil through your hair, and pinned it up tight into a heavy, stiff style. Layer after layer of white cloth was wrapped around your waist, pulled snug until breathing took a little effort. Finally came the thick white shiromuku robe and the wide wataboshi hood, keeping your face down in shadow.
The ceremony was held in an old shrine tucked under the pines. The air inside smelled of wet cedar, old wood, and incense.
Kyojuro Rengoku was already standing there when you were brought through the doors.
He stood straight in a dark formal haori, the flame trim at the hem catching what little light came through the wooden slats. Even just standing still, he had a solid, heavy presence that made the silent room feel less overwhelming.
You knelt down on the woven mats beside him. Sitting a few inches away, you could catch the faint smell of clean cotton, starched fabric, and a natural warmth coming off him.
The priest started the chanting, his voice moving in a monotonous rhythm that blended together after a few minutes. Your hands stayed tucked deep into your wide sleeves, pressed tight together in your lap.
Then came the san-san-kudo.
The shrine maiden poured rice wine into a small red cup. Kyojuro took it first. His hands were broad, thick-jointed, and covered in calluses from training, but he held the thin wooden cup carefully. He took three quiet sips, then waited while the maiden refilled it for you.
When you picked up the cup, your fingers shook just enough to set the wine moving. You drank it down. The liquor was sharp and warm, burning a little down your throat, but it didn't do anything to stop the jittery feeling in your chest.
As you put the cup back on the tray, you looked up slightly from under the edge of the hood.
Kyojuro was looking right at you.
His golden eyes were wide and open, without any of the sharp, calculating look your father always had. When he saw you catch him looking, his jaw tightened a fraction, and he gave you a small, clear nod—just a simple signal to let you know he was right there with you.
A second later, the priest struck the brass bell, the deep tone ringing out against the wood pillars to end the ceremony. The vows were finished. You were married. All that was left was the long carriage ride to his family's estate, and the dark bedroom waiting at the end of the hall.
The journey to the Rengoku estate was long, made in a covered wooden carriage that swayed steadily over the dirt roads as dusk settled. Through the gap in the side curtains, the sky shifted from grey to dark indigo, then to black.
When the wheels ground to a halt on the gravel driveway, Kyojuro stepped down first. He held out a broad hand to help you down, his grip firm and warm against your cold fingers, holding steady until your wooden sandals caught their balance on the stone path.
The Rengoku estate was sprawling and old, built from dark cedar with wide open verandahs and low tile roofs. The air here smelled different from your father’s ridge—less like mountain pine, more like dried cedar, charcoal smoke, and sweet incense.
Kyojuro dismissed the servants at the entrance with a quiet word of thanks, leaving the wide hallway still.
"I hope the travel wasn't too rough on you!" he said, turning to face you. Without the quiet weight of the shrine hanging over him, he looked remarkably tall in the low light of the hall, his broad shoulders filling out his dark haori. Yet, as he looked down at you, an awkward stillness settled over him. He cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck with one large hand. "The roads from the northern ridge can be uneven this time of year!"
"It was fine, thank you," you murmured, keeping your hands resting quietly over your sash.
"Good! That is... good!" He gave a short, firm nod, though his golden eyes darted toward the far end of the corridor before settling back on you. "Come, let me show you to the main room."
He led you down the polished wooden floorboards, his footsteps quiet despite his size. Sliding open a paper screen, he showed you into a large bedchamber. In the center, a double futon was laid out on the tatami, covered in a thick peach-colored quilt. A small iron brazier burned softly in the corner, keeping the room warm.
"I asked the maids to leave extra blankets if you felt the night air," Kyojuro said, gesturing toward the futon. He stood near the threshold, shifting his weight slightly from one foot to the other. "If you need tea, or water, please let me know. The kitchen is down the east hall, and I am—well, I am right here."
You stood in the middle of the room, listening to the light crackle of charcoal. The silence between you felt heavy with everything that had been planned for this night. You thought of your father’s sharp words over breakfast, your mother’s flat voice, and the book left in your room the night before.
You turned to look at him directly. "Kyojuro."
He straightened up at once. "Yes?"
"Are we going to sleep together tonight?" you asked plainly. "Or not?"
Kyojuro froze. A dark, sudden flush spread over his cheeks, climbing all the way to his ears. The Hashira looked entirely caught off guard. He opened his mouth, stopped, cleared his throat, and lifted a hand in a flustered gesture.
"Ah—that is—well!" He took a steady breath, forcing himself to settle, though the red remained high on his face. He stepped further into the room, his voice turning quieter, more grounded. "My dear... please do not feel pressed. I know how this arrangement was made. It was settled between our fathers, not by your choice. I would never dream of taking advantage of you or forcing anything before you are ready."
You looked down at your hands, smoothing the silk of your sleeve. "It is expected," you said softly, feeling the weight of your home sit back in your chest. "It is why my father agreed to it. It is why I am here."
Kyojuro walked over slowly. He didn't touch you right away; instead, he knelt down on the tatami so his eyes matched yours.
"Forget your father," he said, his voice dropping an octave, steady and quiet. "Forget what was promised in side rooms. I do not view you as a duty, and I do not want you to give yourself to me out of obligation. If we are to be husband and wife, I want it to be because you wish to share yourself with me." He reached out, his thick, calloused fingers settling gently over yours. "If you wish to rest tonight, I will sleep on the outer mat and ask for nothing."
His words settled over you, loosening the knot of dread that had been sitting in your stomach since yesterday. You looked into his eyes, finding no demands, only a patient warmth.
"I want to," you whispered. "I want to stay here with you."
A quiet breath escaped him, his shoulders relaxing. "Then let me take care of you," he murmured.
Kyojuro moved with slow, deliberate patience. His hands, rough from swordwork, were remarkably light as he worked through the heavy ties of your bridal garments. He unknotted the sash, slipping the thick white robe down off your shoulders, his thumbs brushing your collarbone as your skin met the warm air of the room.
As each layer came away, he spoke your name in low, steady tones—saying it with an easy affection, telling you how soft you felt, how glad he was to have you in his home. His words were simple and direct, spoken with an honesty that made your face burn for an entirely different reason.
When he laid you back onto the peach futon and shed his own robes, bringing his weight over yours, the heat coming off him caught your breath. His hands slid down your sides, resting heavily on your hips to keep you anchored to the soft cotton beneath you.
As he settled against you, your gaze drifted down between your bodies. In the warm light of the brazier, you couldn't help but see the reality of him. The prints mother gave me were so stiff, you thought, your chest rising quickly as you looked at him. The drawings were harsh and exaggerated... but this isn't like that. He's heavy, warm, real flesh... nothing like those black ink lines.
He didn't rush. His mouth found yours in a slow, deep kiss that tasted faintly of tea and rice wine. He kissed along your jaw, down your neck, and over your collarbones, his breath hot against your skin. Every touch brought your name back to his lips, murmured softly against your skin.
When he separated your thighs and pushed inside, the sudden fullness brought a low moan from your throat. It's so tight, you thought, your hands gripping his shoulders as heat bloomed deep in your core, replacing the sharp ache with an intense, heavy pressure. He's completely filling me... it feels so warm...
Kyojuro paused immediately, his forehead resting against yours, his chest heaving as he waited for you to settle.
"Are you alright?" he rasped, his golden eyes searching yours. "Tell me if it is too much."
"Ah... no," you moaned softly, wrapping your arms around his broad back, feeling the muscle move under your palms as you lifted your hips toward him. "It's alright, Kyojuro... it feels good. Keep going."
He shifted his weight over you, his chest rising and falling in heavy, measured breaths. The heat radiating off him wrapped around you in the dim room.
He drew back slowly, pulling almost entirely free before pressing back in with a long, deep slide that made your toes curl against the futon.
"Ah... Kyojuro..." a breathy moan broke from your throat, your fingers digging into his back.
"y/n," he grunted into your neck, his voice low and stripped of its usual volume. "Look at me, y/n. Let me see you."
You opened your eyes to find him staring down at you with wide gold eyes. There was a raw earnestness in his face—a man used to quiet discipline now completely caught up in the rhythm of your body beneath his.
His hand slid down your side, his calloused fingers gripping your hip, holding you steady on the futon as he picked up the pace. Every thrust was long and heavy, filling you so completely that every slide inward pulled another gasp from your throat. The slick friction echoed quietly in the room, mixed with the rustle of the peach quilt and his uneven breathing.
"You fit around me so well, y/n," he murmured against your temple, his lips brushing your skin. "So soft... so warm... I cannot begin to tell you how good this feels."
You lifted your hips to meet him, chasing the deep ache building in your center. The weight of him pressing down, combined with the steady roll of his hips, sent sharp waves of pleasure down your thighs.
"More..." you whimpered, your hands sliding up his back into his hair. "Please, Kyojuro..."
He let out a low groan, his grip on your hips tightening as his pace turned faster, deeper. He drove into you again and again, the steady impact sending shocks of warmth straight through you.
Your mind went hazy, filled only with the feeling of him—his rough hands, his hot chest against yours, and the heavy pulse of his body inside you.
To your surprise, bright tears gathered in his eyes, slipping down his flushed cheeks and landing warm on your collarbone. He wasn't crying from pain, but from a swell of feeling he couldn't hold back. He let out a breathless, quiet laugh against your neck, embarrassed by the tears, but he didn't stop. He held you tighter, burying his face in your shoulder, his movements deeper, driven by a need to stay as close as possible.
"y/n... y/n, my sweet girl," he choked out into your skin, his voice cracking as his tears met your neck. "My wife... you are everything to me... so perfect..."
The friction built, the heat between your thighs coiling tight until your vision blurred. You moaned his name again, your inner walls tightening sharply around him as a sudden, intense wave of pleasure pulled through your whole body.
The tight grip of your climax broke his remaining hold. Kyojuro gasped, his chest heaving as his movements grew short, shallow, and deep. With one last drive that pressed his hips flush against yours, he wrapped his arms tightly around your waist and buried his face into your shoulder.
A heavy gasp tore from him as his body went rigid. He held you pinned to the futon, trembling as he began to cum deep inside you, spilling his warm seed into your core in long, hot pulses.
He stayed buried within you for a long time after, his chest rising and falling in deep breaths as the shudders slowly faded into the quiet room.
Eventually, the space settled back into peace. The iron brazier in the corner cast a low amber light across the mats.
Kyojuro pulled the thick peach quilt over your bare shoulders, tucking it in to keep the night draft off your skin. He drew you flush against his chest on the futon, resting your head right under his chin. His strong arms wrapped around your waist, holding you firmly against his heart, which was still beating a steady, rapid rhythm against your cheek.
He stroked your hair with one hand, his breathing gradually slowing into a calm rise and fall.
Before sleep took him, he leaned down and pressed a long, quiet kiss to the top of your forehead.
"Thank you, y/n," he murmured into your hair, his voice rough and soft. "Rest well, my sweet wife."
