Noticing you're right in front of a nuclear plant which is going to explode in all Chernobyl style.
Oh wow. That’s actually pretty good.
The sudden sound of a fire alarm tore him from his thoughts, and he nearly broke his neck as his head whipped around towards the source. His eyes widened in terror as he saw the nuclear plant only a few hundred meters away. How the hell had he managed to wander here, of all places?!
Scientists poured from the building as the alarm kicked into stage three, what he recognized as a civil defense siren. The image of a foggy town flashed through his mind as his legs began to move on their own, and he gave a slight chuckle at the irony. At this point, he had only about two and a half minutes before the reactor went sky high in a lethally spectacular fashion, reducing its surroundings to a radioactive wasteland.
The sirens were beginning to lower in pitch. About thirty seconds until he was nothing more than a distant memory.
"Come on! It can’t end like this!" He yelled to himself, pushing himself harder. His legs carried him faster than they had ever before. By now, he had made it into the nearby city, and was several blocks into the urban maze of steel and concrete. He sprinted past panicking citizens and vaulted over cars in his attempt to escape the impending hydrogen explosion.
It still wouldn’t be nearly enough to save him. There was an earth-shaking roar, and he found the ground racing up to meet his head. With a sharp crack and an equally sharp pain, the asphalt street left a bloody red stain on the side of his head. His head a blur, he could do little more than watch the rapidly approaching wall of destruction.
Silently, he said a quick prayer. He had never been terribly religious, but nothing convinces one to fully turn to religion like staring their own mortality in the face.
"Dammit…" He whispered angrily, closing his eyes as though to block out the sight of his inevitable demise. He had made it so far…
A single tear rolled down his cheeks before he was consumed in the massive fireball that the core melt accident had caused.
Okay so it wound up a bit longer than I’d originally intended. But nuclear meltdowns really can cause hydrogen explosions, which can be positively massive sometimes. With such a large power source, I’d think that the resulting explosion would be devastating.
Yes, I did do a little bit of research. I also had to check in a thesaurus for more ways to say “death”, because I’d used up the three I could think of off the top of my head.
Sorry it took me so long. I kept getting distracted. orz
