Taizo-in in Myoshin-ji temple
Taizo-in is one of 46 affliated temples of Myoshin-ji temple. It was founded by the zen priest, Muin-soin in 1404. He was the highly respected third head priest of Myoshin-ji temple. The dry landscape garden built by Kano Motonobu and the 20th century built garden called Yoko-en by Nakane Kinsaku are two outstanding gardens in Taizo-in.
Yoko-en was made adopting the 14th century garden style and is a pond strolling garden. The garden has a sui-kin-kutsu, an earthen jar buried in a garden which produces an echo sound by the drops of water.
You can enjoy various kinds of flowers such as cherry blossoms, azeleas,wisterias, lotuses, camerias and so on, according to each season.
Ninnaji temple
Ninnaji temple was founded by Emperor Uda as his father's wish in 888. After he retired, he entered the priesthood and became the head priest of the temple.
Ninnaji temple was the first temple headed by the imperial family, so it is called "Omuro Imperial Palace." Omuro means imperial chamber. Since then till 1868, it had always been an Imperial Palace for the retired emperors. It is built in the Imperial Palace architechture style.
The garden was built in the 17th century and in a landscape garden style. There are two traditional tea houses in the garden, which are not usually open to the public. You can sit on the corridor and appreciate the garden with azaleas. There are not so many people so you can relax and enjoy the Japanese garden leisurely.
