Sang're: Encantadia Chronicles
With the news of an upcoming sequel to Encantadia in production, I couldn't help myself but revisit one of my favourite Filipino fantasy show ever produced. I watched all 218 episodes of the requel in a week and started re-watching the 2005 as well.
Growing up I remember trying to convince my mom to let me stay up late enough to watch the show and it was such a big part of my childhood. My sister, our neighbours, and I would pretend to be one of the sang're and try to reenact the show. From their fight scenes to their drama scenes, we did it all. I tuned in until the very last episode of the original version and even tried to learn the language because that's how drawn in I was with the world-building and fantasy aspect of the show.
Fast forward to 2016, I'm well into post-secondary and live outside the Philippines. When I heard about the requel, I made sure that we had GMA Pinoy TV and all the episodes were recorded. That way I didn't miss any episodes. Now, to be honest, I wasn't a fan of 2016 at first. I was very critical of some of the casting, the CGI work, and even the world-building. It felt familiar but not. I missed the mystical aspect of the show and I missed that I was able to suspend my disbelief for 30 minutes to escape to this enchanted place. I didn't get that escape from the 2016 version because it didn't feel magical enough for me. However, over time, I learned to enjoy the show because of its storytelling. I was invested in the characters and what was happening to them which led me to fall in love with Amihan and Ybrahim's romance in this version. I enjoyed the sisters' bond here and wish we saw more of it in the show. I liked how each Sang're got a chance to meet their father and we, the viewers, got to know each of them.
There were a lot of positives from the 2016 version which is why I feel sad that "season 2" of Encantadia will be focusing on a different generation. I understand that Pirena, Amihan, Alena, and Danaya have been the 4 iconic sangres for almost 20 years and it's time for new characters to succeed them. Unfortunately, I feel that the 2016 version had more stories to offer and the Sang'res had more adventures and stories to explore. Especially with the death of Amihan, there were storylines that were abandoned to accommodate Kylie's departure. I just hope that the fans get a proper closure for these 4 Sang'res and aren't left with an opening ending. Kinda like how Encantadia 2005 concluded. Arman, on the back of a dragon, narrates the story of the 4 Sang'res and properly transitions the audience to the new protectors with him, Armea and Cassandra. 2005 gave the audience a definitive conclusion to the main 4 while setting up a potential sequel. This is something 2016 tried to do but left viewers with more questions since they introduced Cassiopea's twin and set up 4 diwanis running on the beach.
Don't get me wrong, I like the actors that are playing the new Sang'res but I do hope this sequel will be a bridge to continue the original 4 stories until its creator can give those characters a proper send off. Also, I would love to see Danaya as a mother and give Pirena and Alena a chance to have children again. Additionally, it'd be nice to see the growth in Lira and Mira. Lastly, I would love to see Amihan reunite with her sisters and get the happy ending that her parents didn't have the privilege of having.
That being said, I am beyond excited to watch this show and hope that we get book 3 and book 4 like what the creator and writers have shared.
Okay, so I’ve been rewatching Encantadia because of that YbraMihan craving 😂
Anyway, I’m curious to know your thoughts. In that scene where Amihan meets Ybrahim in her dream so she’ll have another tagapagmana, what do you think would have happened if she didn’t stop it from happening? If she gave in to her “selfishness” and got together with Ybrahim again to have another child with him?
Good question, I'm rewatching Encantadia 2005 because of @zarahjoyce skl 😂
-Looking back to that episode, I had two thoughts in mind:
1. That the dream wasn't really a chance for them to procreate once more but to help them regain their memory of Lira thus ending the amnesia arc. (but that would have been too easy, as much as I hated that arc, it did help build up some of the characters).
2. If Amihan gave in, and she conceived another child with Ybrahim, Alena would have hated her more than Pirena ever did. In Alena's point of view, she would have thought of it as either bathalang Emre being unfair or Amihan being selfish af. Because Amihan not only gets to have another child but she gets to have another child with the man Alena loves. While the latter on the other hand, who at that time was still grieving over the death of her son, Ybrahim was the only one she could really rely on. And considering that timeline wherein Alena was trying to save her relationship with Ybrahim (despite knowing that he was already in-love with Amihan), the birth of Ybramihan baby #2 whether it was because of Emre's will or Amihan's choice or both, it would have been a huge slap on her face.
And that would have worsened Alena's pain.
Anyhoo, If Ybrahim and Amihan had a second child, I have always had this feeling that they would have had a son. Not only because I like the idea of having a male sang'gre (apart from Kahlil who's already dead), but it's like sending a message that no matter what, Lira will still be queen of Lireo one day. Plus Ybrahim needs an heir to the throne of Sapiro 😁😁.
So those were my two cents ❤️
IT WAS KYLIE’S MAGIC AFTER ALL
I wondered if my fascination for Ybramihan was because of the story. And that refusing to watch it after Kylie left the show was just some sort of rebellion after all. Was the magic really because the Ybrahim and Amihan storyline was in fact very powerful? Would it have worked if it was any other artist who played the parts?
And as I think about it, I was reminded I didn’t like Dingdong Dantes before - no matter what character he played. So maybe that was that. 2005 Ybramihan didn’t work for me because Dong never had a chance of endearing his character to me.
Am I doing the same thing to Ariana? Just because I didn’t like her apathetic acting in Meant To Be doesn’t exactly mean she would fail as Amihan’s reincarnation right? So I watched it last night. Giving it a shot.
And you know what? The episode left me in a puddle of tears. The only scene I took away was that moment when PaoPao realized there was no punchline - Amihan really is dead. And it resonated not just as a slap of reality but also as a loud ringing reminder that we seem to have kept ignoring: Amihan is long gone and she will never come back.
“Wala na yung una at katangi-tanging diwatang nagmahal sa akin”
Who played mature PaoPao? To be honest, I wasn’t really moved by his acting, his facial expression didn’t seem like that of someone who just realized they’ve lost someone. But Imaw’s ‘balintataw’? That would have brought anyone who loved Amihan down on their knees. It was just heartbreaking watching that hologram play out. Like reliving the exact moment they broke your heart into tiny little pieces. Sabi nga ni Ybrahim:
Walang ipinagbago Amihan, kahit matagal ka nang namayapa, hanggang ngayon nasasaktan pa rin kaming lahat
True enough. Kylie has long left the show, I think it has been months already yet it still pierces right through your heart to see her face. Which I find amusing actually. I used to hate that “resting pained expression” on Kylie’s face. Now I can’t seem to get enough of it that I had to replay youtube clips and that scene from last night on how she died.
So, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Ariana. Sorry, but maybe it was just me, I didn’t feel kilig in her scene with Ybrahim. The touches on her hand and shoulder and the stolen looks that were supposed to be subtle were just too blatantly played out you couldn’t be fooled by the effort to remind you it was Amihan’s ivtre inside of her. And what made it such a fail was Arra’s ‘wide eyed bland expression’ on her face whatever the scene may be. She kind of reminded me of Kris Aquino - that one expression for every single emotion. It was kind of hard to miss. I have seen that in her breakup scene with Ivan in Meant To Be. Sorry, dear, maybe I am too attached with Kylie’s Amihan but that 'one facial expression for all’ kind of just doesn’t work for me the way it probably should.
Ruru has obviously been putting more weight than he should just so it works out. Pero iba pa rin eh. Iba yung looks nya kay Kylie eh.
So this I would have to conclude: it was Kylie after all. Ybramihan worked its wonders to me because of how Kylie took the reins on her character. Of how Ruru seems to be basking in the glow on Kylie’s face, on how he seems to get lost in her eyes, and how his lips seem to be pulled into a bright smile whenever he sees her. It all seems automatic and natural when he’s in a room with Kylie.
Kinakailangan ng iyong ama na bumitaw sa alaala ni Amihan kung nais nyang maging masaya muli
And that quote from Alena. No, Alena. Maybe you’ve never loved someone the way Ybrahim loves Amihan or the way we love Amihan and Ybrahim. But understand this: you don’t let go of someone and their memories just so you can be happy. Happiness finds you when you least expect it. He’s not sad because he keeps Amihan’s memories, he’s sad because he feels like being happy would be like robbing Amihan - like it would be unfair to be happy when she's not around. And because their love was so powerful that it was hard to move on from that. And what he needs is not to let go of those memories but for someone to remind him that it’s okay to keep Amihan in his heart BUT it’s also okay to be happy and to move on with his life. Because Amihan would want that. And that my dear, is how you tell someone to move on (not by telling him to let go of Amihan’s memories)
In case there is ever any doubt, it has all been blown to smithereens. Ybrahiman didn’t get me hook because of Ybrahim and Amihan after all. It was all because of Ruru and Kylie. Ruru wouldn’t have worked with anybody else in that show. Because it was Kylie’s magic all this time…
Saan man tayo dalhin ng agos ng tubig
Ilang kabundukan man ang kailangang tawirin
Init ng ating pag-ibig ay mananatili
Hanggang sa ating huling hininga
Tayong dalawa magpakailanman...

Helloooooooo! Happy New Year! I initially wanted to create a compilation of YbraMihan kissing scenes but I decided to include some Lira moments because why not? In fair mga bes I like how it turned out because it tells a story from a fan's POV char! A little fail on the bg music (sorry about that) but I'll work on that if I have more time to spare.
~Happy 2022 e correi 💙💙
