An easy day one win for Takayasu ❤️
No one talk to me. I’m upset over my sumo wrestling hopes being crushed.
Takayasu, why? 😢
[IMHO] Bouts of the Kyushu Basho (2024)
With the Kyushu basho, all wrapped up, the Rikishis can finally have some days of respite… I think? Here are some of what went down during the Kyushu basho; some exciting bouts and moments. Fanservice time!! What a fanservice Wakatakakage provided to Ichiyamamoto, with Tamawashi (aka The Iron Man) and Nishikigi in the mix. This is one of my favourite moments of Kyushu-basho – seeing younger…
grand sumo tournament
november 16, 2019
for the second year, i went to the fukuoka grand sumo tournament!
this time around i felt like i had more knowledge of the details of sumo, but the experience was worse because we ended up sitting in front of an american military family who talked through the entire tournament day and who treated us badly when we tried to help explain sumo to them. it was really off-putting lol.
the sumo was great though, as always! i will probably end up doing this each year i’m in japan.

guess who went to day 7 of the grand sumo tournament!
the tournament itself is called kyushu basho and is held every year. its one of six major sumo tourneys that determine a sumos ranking. tourneys like this are usually held for 15 days and sumos from all over japan come to compete.
its a sport thats steeped in shinto traditions. before the match, sumos throw salt in the ring to purify it.
i dont know much about sumo but i understood two things: 1. sumos cannot touch the ring with anything but their feet, and 2. the first sumo to leave the ring loses.
