There had been no avoiding the darkness that summer. It spread through Wizarding Britain like the plague. Should you be spared from death, you might still be infected. War left nobody clean.

From the moment you woke up, your steps would be followed by a great shadow. Will it be me who dies today? Will it be someone I care for?

For many, there was only one way to protect those closest to you: To become the villain yourself.

It was the middle of August, and summer lay on it’s deathbed. The Malfoy manor had become unrecognizable — while never exactly a friendly place, it had now become a den of debauchery. One wouldn’t have to look for long to find sings of dark magic — strange symbols had been scribbled on the walls, and a pool of dark blood greeted guests in the hallway.

Most people present were Death Eaters, but there were others, as well — Fenrir Greyback’s pack of werewolves had destroyed the ballroom completely and turned it into their camp, and a group of harpies resided on the rooftop.

Upstairs, in the dining room, there was Lord Voldemort, effortlessly reigning over all this chaos.

Today, a new Death Eater would make an appearance at the Malfoy Manor. Her name was Georgiana Baker. Allegedly, she was the little sister of an auror: A challenging one to win over, some would say, but the Voldemort didn’t agree. After all, her brother would be facing the armies of the Dark Lord everyday. There was no way to guarantee his safety, other than conspiring with the enemy itself.

The dead may be silent, but war was loud. War was the sound of screams, the deafening noise of shattering rock, the woosh of hexes and curses flying past your head.

Voldemort didn’t think it at all sad, or horrible, but he did consider it all to be very undignified. He had hoped taking over Hogwarts to be a simple task, but his old school was putting up quite the fight.

What was worse, the Dark Lord had yet to find the one he had come all the way here for — Harry Potter was somewhere in the castle, but Lord Voldemort hadn’t caught as much as a glimpse of the scarred boy.

Voldemort’s frustration only served to make him more dangerous.

Most aurors fought on the side of the Dark Lord, now — they had little choice, given that those were the orders of the Minister of Magic himself. Pius Thicknesse had been under the Imperius Curse for a while now.

However, among the aurors, there were some defectors — Kingsley Shacklebolt, for example, and Nymphadora Tonks both fought against their own.

Lord Voldemort callously stepped over the corpse of a Ravenclaw boy who could’ve hardly been any older than fifteen. He spared no thought to the child, let alone his parents, whose world would be reduced to little but darkness as the dead were tallied the next day. It wasn’t in Voldemort to feel sorry. All he could think of was finding Harry Potter — and finally, finally killing the boy.

At the corner of one red serpent’s eye, Voldemort spotted movement. A girl with auburn hair approached.

The Dark Lord had no time for such delays. Without as much as turning his head, he raised his wand and pointed it at the girl he didn’t know to be Georgiana Baker.

“Avada Kedavra.”
