The Twilight Sad - l’entrepot / Arlon

Have you ever fantasized about dying and then attending your own wake, just so you could hear what everyone would say? Or is it just me? It's a strange quirk of human nature that we often can only think of the best things to say about things or people after they have expired. Héautontimorouménos could quite possibly be the best band you've never heard of, and they no longer exist.
One of the many pluses of playing in a band is that you sometimes get to share the stage with some of your favourite artists, and so it was a great honour to be asked to support them on their final "farewell" show in their home town of Arlon, Belgium. Many people think we're crazy to drive hundreds of km for one show, but I'd honestly counter that it'd be crazier to miss the opportunity to experience these life-affirming times.
Héautontimorouménos' last show was something I would describe as "poetically beautiful". Now, I've seen a lot of artist's shows in my time (well over 3000 at a rough guess), but this really was something special. It's not by accident or for hyperbolic purposes that I used the analogy of a "wake" before - populated as it was by friends, family and well-wishers, the atmosphere was potent and full of love and devotion, celebratory yet also somehow solemn and reverent. And of course, being Belgium, there was a slightly sophisticated air about it all too - tonight's rockers drank red wine and talked politely about philosophy (probably) in the change-overs and line-checks. In fact, it most reminded me of going to some underground theatre production. But it was their set - their music, the mood, the song-writing, the sound, the skill, the performance, the sheer emotion of that final live outing that really just completely blew my mind. Everything just seemed perfect, in a way I just have never seen before. Now, I'm completely biased here - they were already in my list of "favourite bands I've played with", and I'd had their CD on rotation ever since I saw them first as I shared a "these guys are BLOODY AWESOME!!!" look with Malc that night in Luxembourg, but I just don't know how else to put it - this will go down as one of the most magical, beautiful performances I've ever witnessed, and I'll never forget it. I talked to many others who also seemed to experience the magic that I did - when everything on that stage just transcended to an almost metaphysical level. I can often be heard arguing with Malc over what I believe to be his over-use of the adjective "amazing" - on this occasion it fit like a tailor-made glove. The only downside is that now I don't know if I can ever expect to experience something like that again, and most live shows from now on will sit very much in the shadow of this one.
The rest of the night was fun; the other artists were also of high quality and we enjoyed our set too, but this night completely belonged to The Héauto Boys.
So, although I may never be able to confidently say their name without pausing, I shall always remember their performance on this inspirational night, and wish to publicly thank them for the music and the good times. I slept in a room full of posters detailing a short but action-packed past and it was difficult not to feel a premature nostalgia. As a fan, I was genuinely sad to know that Denis, "Panda" and Sofian were going their separate ways… but nothing lasts forever. And often the very best stuff lasts but a wink of time. Indeed, most of us will pass our entire artistic lives without having attained such astonishing heights. So, salutations and the best of luck in all your future musical endeavours, boys, and never mind the wake - you've reminded us all the importance of celebrating while we're still alive. Viva! indeed.

And if you missed them, this is what they are like (though this final show was about x1000 times better) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFyGOnPH7tw
