What are the water requirements?
40 litres (approx 10 US gallons) minimum for a m/f pair, tank should be rectangular rather than square as they like the floorspace (territorial). my 24" x 12" x 12" could technically accommodate 1 male and a harem of up to 3 females but i didn't want to risk it as females are also territorial!
they tolerate 23-27ºC (73-81ºF) but i stick my heater on to 26ºC.
pH 7.5-9.0 as lake tanganyika is hard and alkaline.

disaster struck: timer switch broke for lights and they were on permanently for 5 days whilst i was away. cleaned up as much muck/dead plant matter as i could and pruned the vallis but probably needs another water change. mr and mrs occie however are fine (phew).
my male l. ocellatus bit me today when i was doing a water change. i like how cocky he is, taking on something 10x bigger than him, something that can easily crush him and his shell-house and yet he is willing to risk all that just to prove he's mega strong and manly to his lady.
