The Perfect Opportunity

It all began when I received an email from HR about the Leave for Change program from Uniterra, a WUSC & CECI program, which is a short term international volunteering opportunity offered to employees where they can contribute change in a developing country.

When I initially came across this opportunity, I thought I had to apply because it would be an exciting experience and an amazing journey. My main motivation is that I can be a part of a program where I can offer my knowledge and services in order to help someone else. With this opportunity, I can contribute in a different matter – by stimulating growth and making a difference, whether it’s with one person or many, while being submerged in that environment. I began by visiting the website and reading about the program. I was then reading blog posts from volunteers, looking up countries that I can potentially visit and I went over the job postings. Although my family is from Africa, I personally have never been and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to not only work abroad but to also explore a piece of this beautiful continent that I wasn’t really familiar with.

That is when I decided to work on my resume, my application and to also create a list of my top 3 job locations and positions – my number one was to work in Senegal in financial management.

Once everything was gathered, I submitted my application. The following week, I was selected for an interview and I felt that I did very well. Shortly thereafter, I was the candidate to participate in the Leave For Change program!!

I can't wait to start this new adventure. Follow me on my journey to Dakar, Senegal…

After many hours flying from Kathmandu to Abu Dhabi to Dublin to Toronto, I arrived home around 6pm on Sunday night. It was great to be back on campus today and I was able to stay awake the whole day. I am looking forward to sharing my experience with my family, friends and colleagues in the coming months.

Veronica and I started our last day in Nepal with an Everest flight. It was an awe-inspiring experience to see such majestic mountains from 30,000 feet.

Today I worked my final day with HICAST and its incredibly talented and generous team. I will continue my work with them after returning to Canada, but it was difficult to say goodbye. I was treated to a lovely lunch and a beautiful presentation as you can see above. I can’t wait to hang it up when I get home. Pictured from the top is Bimal, my amazing counterpart, the HICAST team at lunch and Binayak (HICAST chairperson) with Dibya from CECI.  Before I decided to apply to the Leave for Change program at the University of Guelph I attended some presentations by L4C alumni and everyone said the same thing, that what you receive from the experience is so much more than what you give. Now that I’ve experienced it for myself, I couldn’t agree more. I just hope that I have given them enough and they feel my contributions are worthwhile.  Tomorrow, the long trek home starts. It’s strange to think I will be back at work on Monday.
