Ok here’s my design for Esme in Glorious Masquerade event! Her dress is a combination of her red dress and of the midnight masquerade. Her dress is mainly red, and the bottom layer is purple, outlined in gold along with the top. The top layer and her sleeves are her signature scarf, and is transparent as well! The sleeves are off the shoulder, but in the back has the extra fabric, which I’ve tried drawing a mini sketch to help show it.
I’m pretty happy with how everything turned out! Of course tambourine and Djali (not drawn) is included in the event. Plus one can see where her burns are from the bandages.
clopin @ esmerelda after learning she stepped foot in a church: how did you not burn up??????
thinking about how esmerelda says “well it has to be somebody’s business” and how that’s such an indicator to her personality.
obviously it’s got two sides to it, you could interpret it as her having a nosy habit, she investigates things, or puts herself in situations that end up not playing out in her favour, but at the same time, it shows how much she cares, and is willing to pay attention to certain things that others might not. she’s willing to make quasimodo’s situation worth paying attention to when absolutely nobody else does. she questions authority when nobody else does. she makes it her business to stop the hanging of two people she cares for very deeply despite the potential danger in doing so or trusting them at all. you can tell she’s detail oriented because she notices phoebus’ hands are rough and calloused, lending her the conclusion that he comes from a difficult background.
i think, putting aside her flaws for a moment and looking at her as solely a heroine, esmerelda believed in concepts that were ahead of her time, which in tandem with frollo’s character arc are what led to her death. the hunchback of notre dame musical has this insane philosophical message about purity and innocence with quasimodo, but when you look at esmerelda’s arc, you get a story about an omnipotently powerful man suppressing the forward notions of an oppressed young girl striving for a better tomorrow, which is an incredibly modern idea despite the fact that the story takes place over 400 years ago.
things I want Esmeralda to know about/have because I think she deserves them!

blushing and hiding my face like a school girl bc can you IMAGINE the dresses esmerelda would wear in a modern world? oh my god it just makes me happy imagining her at a thrift store buying old fabrics and bedsheets and turning them into skirts and dresses and shirts, like this girls fashion sense would be on POINT. oh my god esmerelda having this burning interest in vintage fashion and making old skirts and stuff hhhhh. i dont care if this is out of character i just want esmerelda in like a layered skirt and a crop top and doc martens, a fuck ton of piercings, and her BOTTOM of a boyfriend phoebus de martin with his hair in a bun, jeans and a button down shirt that looks like either a bus seat pattern or the carpet floor of an 80s bowling alley arcade.
