Lecture 15: Get down, History 105 rock and rollers, and boogie! The disco/funk/soul band Chic from New York City belts out their mega-hit “Le Freak,” containing the familiar refrain “FREAK OUT!” Inspired by two of the band’s members being refused entry in to the trendy disco Studio 54, “Le Freak” (1978) was the first Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit for the band Chic. They had a handful of other hit songs between 1976 and 1983 when they broke up, another casualty of the anti-disco backlash. Chic has reunited and split a number of times since then.
