Some photos from our trip to a little lake near La Pine, OR. It was a ton of fun and I actually caught a rainbow trout while we were there!

Peter Skene Ogden Trail, Ogden Group Camp to Paulina Lake - La Pine, OR
Today we hiked along the Peter Skene Ogden Trail - completing the entire 16+ miles. We started at the Ogden Group Camp and hiked up to Paulina Lake. We had perfect weather for our last hike in this area.
Great trail to hike on, lots of pine needles, just a few rocks, but you have to watch out for the tree roots! Lots of shade, too.
So relaxing listening to the roar of the creek as it tumbles down from Paulina Lake.
Lunch spot near Paulina Falls/Paulina Lake.
Doug had a hitchhiker!
One last look at Paulina Falls before we headed back.
Peter Skene Ogden Trail - La Pine, OR
After taking a couple of days off to recover from our 20-mile hike, we ventured out today and hiked 12 miles on the Peter Skene Ogden Trail. This was a beautiful path that meandered along Paulina Creek - so many waterfalls that we lost count. Let me just show you:
The roar from the river was present throughout this hike, what a pleasant surprise in the high mountain desert! We hiked from the trailhead at Ogden Group Camp up to just past the McKay Crossing Campground. Just lovely!
6 miles up, 6 miles down - pretty steady climb!
Such a beautiful creek!
Crater Rim Trail - Newberry Volcanic National Monument, OR
We dragged ourselves out of bed and onto the trail early today, we were at the trailhead by 6:30, very impressive for us retired folks! Doug has been wanting to do a longer hike, in preparation for a backpacking trip in August, so today we tackled the Crater Rim Trail - 20+ miles.
Luckily, the majority of the hike’s elevation gain happened in the first few miles of the hike - making the climb up to Paulina Peak. Whew! What a relief to get that out of the way.
Taking a rest on the way up Paulina Peak to take a photo, any excuse to give us a chance to catch our breath!
The Rim trail diverts off before reaching the top of Paulina Peak, but the views from the trail were still spectacular. We were fortunate to have such a clear day!
Paulina Lake and the Obsidian Flow from just east of Paulina Peak.
Mt. Bachelor and Three Sisters in the distance.
The view from the north side of the trail - East Lake in the foreground, Obsidian Flow and Paulina Peak in the distance, Paulina Lake off to the right in the distance.
Still smiling at our lunch break!
One last view of Paulina Lake, Paulina Peak, and the Obsidian Flow from the trail before we began our descent to the trailhead. My knees were definitely happy to hit level ground and our truck! But we made it - 20.1 miles!
This was a great trail. Well marked and minimal traffic, we ran into a trail worker and a group of 3 people who had hiked up to the overlook (where we stopped for lunch). Other than that, we did not run into anyone else. Except for the climb up Paulina Peak and the descent at the end, the trail was level and free of downed trees. Great views and lots of shade. It did get a bit warm towards the end of the hike, but it could have just been my desire to be done!
