Another addendum to the Van Helsing Family Wardrobe: I can’t prove that Guillermo’s new fondness for vests and gloves in S3 is a reference to his ancestor Peter Cushing’s old Van Helsing films, but he should definitely keep wearing them.
Loud and frenetic, Kuta and Legian are the epicentre of mass tourism in Bali. Kuta has narrow lanes jammed with cafes, surf shops, incessant motorbikes and an uncountable number of T-shirt vendors and bleating offers of 'massage'. Nevertheless, Kuta today has become a popular beach destination in its own right, alive with tourists from all over the world, swimming, surfing or sunbathing by the beach. When you are in Kuta, you know that you are in a holiday town, and people here are in a holiday mood.
For our first two days, we stayed in Cara Cara Inn. This hostel is a vibrant, fun-filled and hip boutique inn, café, & bar in the heart of Kuta (just 450m from Kuta Beach) for the free-spirited and young-at-heart. All rooms come with en-suite bathroom, breakfast, WiFi, daily housekeeping, toiletries, & air-conditioning. The price is really cheap (around 600-700 Php only a night), considering all the amenities and the proximity to the beach and night life (would totally consider just staying in haha)
Vihara Dharmayana temple is one of the many cultural landmarks in Indonesia that can be found in Bali’s own Chinatown. It is a few minutes walk from Kuta's main coastal strip. It gives us a glimpse into the rich history of this place. The temple is very well maintained by the local devotees, mostly of Chinese descent, who regularly visit for prayers and communal activities, especially during the Lunar New Year.
The main structure of the temple features intricate far eastern-style architecture that creates a vivid and striking sight that gives us a view that it does not age. Stepping into the temple’s courtyard gives the visitors a calming sense of peace and tranquility, with its incenses smoke from the altars that adds to the spiritual atmosphere.
La Plancha, a thriving cafe on Mesari Beach at Seminyak’s southern end, teases your senses with splashes of colours throughout its two-level structure. With large and colourful parasols on its beachfront, it appeals most at sunset when you can sink into beanbags around mini tables laid out on the sand. Living up to its name, La Plancha (literally ‘the grill’) serves a variety of Spanish and barbecued delights. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the cafe is a welcoming stopover on morning beach strolls, a day out in the waves or for fun evening gatherings. A regular agenda presents assorted gigs and live DJs.
As the sky darkens, lighting floods the beachside while jockeys plug in their turntables, spinning lively beats ranging from soul to reggae and chill-out. With every turn of the day, the sand in front of the cafe is swiftly cleared from last night’s setups; parasols folded and beanbags tucked away – on standby for another evening’s round. At sunrise, the settings is great for those who wish to have their morning treat with the white Seminyak seaside and rolling surf in view.
Overall, the setting is relaxed and rustic, with nice vibes day and night, and service delivered by a team of friendly, laidback and modest staff. Wide-open views, refreshing breezes, simple but satisfying menus and drink selections complement the La Plancha experience.
Kuta Beach is on the western side of the island's narrow isthmus. It's considered Bali's most famous beach resort destination. It is also minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport, plus the nearby resorts of Legian and Seminyak are all within close walking distance.
Every late afternoon, hundreds of people gather to watch the spectacular sunsets and enjoy a meal of fresh seafood from one of the many beachside cafes. A rather frenzied traffic scene has become commonplace here. Even so, Kuta Beach continues to attract thousands of visitors every year with its unique charm.
