‘The first real leaf is a new idea... it has to work harder than everything above it, all the while enduring a misery of shade.’ It's a quote from a book I'm reading right now, 'Lab Girl' by Hope Jahren, a geobiologist at the University of Hawaii. It's her life story that features her work, plants, science and personal life. I haven't finished it yet, but it's a real inspiration for me. Coloured pencils on paper.

Today’s contemplation comes from the end of chapter seven of the book Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren. “One new idea allowed the plant to see a new world and draw sweetness, but of a whole new sky.” New perspectives and novel ideas pass most of us by due to innate fear of change and uncertainty. Sometimes the sweetest of new skies lay just adjacent, but our ability to tap into that sweetness is blocked by our traditions, privileges, confirmation biases, culture, dogma, anxiety, fear, orthodoxy, or any number of obstacles. Thriving under new sky does not mean the old sky wasn’t valuable or nourishing; but old sky does not preclude the existence of perhaps a more nourishing, healthier, and sweeter new sky; or at the least, a sky better suited for new growth. I suppose we can never know without following the example of the cactus in this story - to try out a new idea, rather than sticking to the more comfortable cycle of re-validating the old.
