was talking with coworkers yesterday trying to nail down what our break situation is like, bc i know if you get scheduled 9 hours then you can take an hour lunch, but i hadn't seen anyone taking any lunches as well as a fifteen and was wondering if that was a company thing or just everyone being like "nah i don't need a break"

got told they were only really allowed if you had 5 hours before or after a lunch

customer overheard us and looked horrified

"that is NOT complicit with labor laws"

so i just looked it up, bc when i first worked here i was new and didn't know anything about labor laws, and also it's been so long i don't remember what the breaks were like back then (tho probably the same). but in CT state laws mandate a 30 minute minimum lunch for anything over 5 hours, and a 10 minute minimum paid break for every certain amount of hours over 7.5 (if you work 10, you get one, if you work 14 you get two). you also get two lunches if you work long enough. all mandated by state law.

which is what i've been living with the past decade, and i got used to having one lunch and two 15s every 8 hour shift (which due to my own work, i usually just took as one hour long break in the middle (i only clocked out for the 30) bc it was easier for me)

ks law? nope. idk if that guy is from another state or just mixed up, but there are no federal laws regarding work breaks, and ks has none itself. everything is a "possible morale booster a company may choose to engage in"

i also, in looking this up, passed by the information that theoretically, your employer can make you work 24 hours a day if they wanted (unless you're under 16). no mandated breaks for this

pretty sure the only reason most places don't try that is bc they would lose their entire workforce immediately. especially in retail lmao.

Most business owners aren’t trying to break labor laws. In fact, most of them genuinely assume they’re doing things correctly.

And that’s where the problem starts.

Labor laws aren’t always simple or straightforward. They’re detailed, layered, and often updated. But day-to-day business decisions usually move much faster than policy updates or legal understanding.

So what ends up happening?

People rely on “what others are doing.” Policies get copied from the internet. HR decisions are based on experience, not updated compliance knowledge. And things slowly become informal without anyone really noticing.

On the surface, everything feels normal.

But underneath, small gaps start building up.

Like unclear offer letters, missing documentation, improper tracking of working hours, or informal handling of exits and leave policies. None of these feel like “violations” in the moment, but they can become serious issues later.

The tricky part is most of these problems only show up when there’s a dispute or an audit. And at that point, it’s already damage control instead of prevention.

This is why labor law compliance is less about fear and more about structure.

It’s not about making business complicated. It’s about making expectations clear for both employers and employees.

Because in most cases, the issue isn’t that businesses ignore the law.

It’s that they don’t always have a simple, practical way to apply it in everyday decisions.

It's cool how Mexico FINALLY established a 40-hour workweek but then also put so many conditions that it only reduced it from 48 to 46 hours, and it doesn't start until 2030. Also, we still only have one guaranteed day off per week. This is all before the senate makes its own changes. The country has had a forty-eight hour workweek with one day off since 1917!

Keep in mind that Claudia Sheinbaum ran on passing a 40 hour workweek with two days off and increased vacation time by the end of 2025. She let business owners dilute the labor reforms into being completely meaningless. Just one more failure added to the increasing list of failures for the "girlboss" joke of a president
