The Banner of Ladonia (Micronation)

The flag of Ladonia is just, funny to me.

Behold, the Glorious Green.

Before we move on to the flag, let's discuss micronations. Micronations are not usually serious claims (looking at you, Sealand). As micronation suggests, the territory they 'claim' is tiny. They arise for various reasons, some because of border disputes, many as a joke.

However, Ladonia became a microstate as a statement for Free Speech and artistic liberty. The artist Lars Vilks created a sculpture (entitled Nimis) in a nature reserve in Skåne, Sweden in 1980. He was prosecuted by the government for placing the sculpture and he was convicted. The sculpture was vandalized and 2/3 of it were lost. Over the next decade, Vilks continued his sculpture work in the nature reserve, and was continually prosecuted.

in 1996, a higher court in Sweden declared that the Skåne court that had convicted Vilks and essentially over-rules their judgement. Though this didn't stop the Skåne authorities from reopening the case in 1998. The existence of Ladonia has been about preserving the art present in their claimed land and creating more art; not only in Ladonia proper but also around the world.

Their banner, nicknamed the Glorious Green, was designed in 1997 but standardized in 2008. The flag follows a 13:21 ratio and the entire flag is the same shade of green. The stitching process allows the cross to appear on embroidered flags. They actually had to specify how to display the Nordic cross on printed flags, and it was to print a small white outline for the Nordic cross.

The purpose of Ladonia is all about creative freedom and freedom of expression. The majority of citizens join (buy a citizenship) Ladonia to advocate for their ideals and preserve the legacy of Lars Vilks.
