It was five in the morning when her bedroom door creaked open. Felicity’s breath hitched. She went limp, bleary eyes fluttering shut. Her heart beat loud in her ears.
Through the netting of her canopy, Christina stood, silhouetted by the dawn.
All thought ceased. Her bitterness evaporated. It was only them. The rhythm of their breath, just out of sync. And when the foot of her bed groaned quietly beneath this… stranger’s weight, Felicity was ashamed at how fast her love rushed back. How it spilled into her bitter heart. Poured down into her stomach until she felt nauseous.
Her leg tickled with the sensation of Christina’s timid fingers tracing circles into her skin. She ached.
Please stay.
Felicity wanted to reach out. To entangle her fingers in her mother’s grasp. But she was frozen. She was caught in the meadow with a deer she didn’t want to spook.
This moment didn’t last.
Her bed creaked. Cold air replaced the warmth her mother left behind. Her door clicked closed once again, and once again… Felicity was alone.
Alone.
