27-year-old Judee Sill’s self-titled debut album was released on 15 September 1971. It was the first release on 28-year-old David Geffen’s Asylum label.
Sill had started her music career writing songs for the Turtles (for $35 a week), including "Lady-O,” which appears on her debut (as well as the Turtles’ 1969 album Turtle Soup). She later performed as an opening act for Crosby & Nash - both David Crosby (guitar) and Graham Nash (organ) play on Sill’s album, and Nash produced “Jesus was a Cross Maker,” her most famous song.

I've been trying hard to keep from needing you But from the start, My heart just rolled and flowed I've seen where it goes And still somehow my love for you grows

what a tune. 'jesus was a crossmaker' was my only experience with judee sill before taking the time to listen to her debut and sophomore efforts, and if only i'd done so sooner! both albums are chock-a-block full of tunes, really pretty tunes. this one in particular (that she wrote for the turtles in '69) is one of my favs.
