jeannie franklyn – known as "genie the tailor" to those in the sunset strip scene – was a prolific fashion designer as well as a columnist for tiger beat. born and raised in new york, she moved to los angeles in 1965 as a night club waitress with dreams of becoming a hollywood actress. also a talented seamstress, she soon started a small custom tailoring trade out of her home in laurel canyon.
genie grew determined to become a tailor for the stars. her very first celebrity client was donovan, who she met through her cousin phil ochs. she would go on to dress the monkees, keith moon, cass elliot, david crosby, sharon tate, and many more in the who's who crowd of the swingin' 60s. in 1968, she opened two boutiques in west hollywood; one in april at 9091 santa monica blvd, right next to the troubadour; another at 8901 sunset blvd, on the upper floor of the whisky a go go. much of the clothing she sold was still personally handmade by her.
