I CRY BECAUSE FMA DEFIES SOCIAL NORMS AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL. and she doesn't have to fight!!! this isn't your YA dystopia novel where tough female protagonist slings weapons over her shoulder and kicks everyone's asses who gets in her way (ALTHOUGH VALID, BUT STILL). this is winry who is tough and brave and beautiful NOT BECAUSE SHE GETS INTO FIGHTS BUT BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T, BECAUSE SHE FIXES PEOPLE AND SHE HELPS PEOPLE AND SHE GENUINELY, GENUINELY CARES.
and let's have a minute to talk about pinako for a second too because HOW BRILLIANT IS SHE. shortest character in the anime (much to ed's delight i'm sure) and she's in the running for the toughest. like. let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that she was actually known as THE PANTHERESS OF RESEMBOOL. let's take a moment to appreciate how she was hohenheim's drinking partner (and in my mind at least could probably drink him under the table because let's be real). let's take a moment to appreciate how when dominic (of rush valley) remembered her, A HUGE BIG MAN and very good automail mechanic, he LITERALLY shook in fear and said she terrified him. let's also appreciate that she took care of winry while her parents were off in the war and after their death, and not only that but took ed and al in after trisha had died??? pinako or bust, basically.
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON RIZA HAWKEYE but seriously. if you think you carry the weight of the world on your back, you don't. because riza does. literally. on her back. let's talk about how she's both roy's queen and his bodyguard. let's talk about how great she is. i feel like it would be so easy to have made riza be defined by her relationship with roy or something just because of their closeness and, let's face it, social norms, BUT SHE'S NOT AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL AND THEY'RE BOTH VERY INTERTWINED BUT THEY'RE NOT DEFINED BY EACH OTHER AND SHE IS NOT DEFINED BY HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM RIZA IS A STRONG CONFIDENT WOMAN. anyway. first, she grows up basically entirely without a mother and her emotionally distant father uses her primarily to document his flame alchemy work on her back before he dies while she's still a teenager. ( my baby ): ) then she joins the army bc she's a badass and she's going places and because she believes in roy mustang. she believes in him and she wants him to succeed and she shows him the alchemy on her back and she excels in the military (NOBODY HAS A BETTER SHOT THAN RIZA HAWKEYE DON'T EVEN TRY TO COMPARE YOURSELF) and she gets sent out to fight in the war and MY BABY ): HER IDEALS GET PULLED APART BECAUSE WHAT IS ON HER BACK HAS NOW BEEN USED FOR THE SLAUGHTER OF ISHVALIANS. AND SHE'S ORDERED TO KILL PEOPLE BECAUSE SHE HAS SUCH A GREAT SHOT AND HER GUILT i can't handle it u guys. and she makes roy burn off parts of the tattoo on her back so nobody can use it again (LET'S IMAGINE HOW PAINFUL THAT WOULD BE FOR A SECOND. BUT LESS PAINFUL THAN HER GUILT SO THINK ABOUT THAT).

idk i have a lot of feelings for riza hawkeye but basically the fact that A GIRL is a bodyguard for A GUY and also THE BEST SHOT IN THE ARMY, again. thank you for defying social gender norms thank you for making this manga/show/series THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THESE AMAZING FEMALES INTO MY LIFE.

THAT IS ENOUGH BAD THINGS IN A SHORT LIFE TO MAKE SOMEONE HAVE AT THE VERY LEAST A COLD, BLACK HEART. but she doesn't and she picks herself up and she helps rebuild her town and good for you rose!!!!!!! you can do it!!!!!
