You’ve got a friend in me!
It had only been about 8 weeks since the wedding. Chris had to leave right after to go do a six-week long press junket. Which unfortunately meant no honey moon until he got back. Shay didn’t mind though, she had some things she needed to be working on. Dean things that were just going to get pushed back until she went back to work. However, since Chris was gone she decided to go back to work for the time being. Man, was she glad she did.
Her department was being temporarily ran by another dean who had not a clue what they were doing. To the effect of that her first week back, all she did was have student conferences to get schedules in order, credits sort out, class changes the whole nine yards. One day she was so wrapped up in her work. She hardly noticed that her friend Arial had come by to see her.
Arial had knocked on the door, and Shay invited the guest in instinctively. With her eyes not leaving her paper work.
“How can I help you?”
“Well you could give your friend a proper hello.”
Shay’s head snapped up. She was so happy to see a familiar face. She immediately stood up, and squealed as she rushed around her desk to greet and hug her friend. The embrace lasted a good minute.
“Uh oh what’s wrong? The only time we long hug is when we are frustrated.”
“Girl, let’s just say I’m thankful that I decided to pop in! I was gone for two weeks. Only TWO WEEKS, and my whole department was in shambles.” Shay massaged the bridge of her nose as she moved back to her seat.
“Shay! You just got married! They couldn’t handle it for two weeks?!”
“Nope! I’m just so happy that Chris is on that junket. Had we went on our honeymoon my department would’ve have had a mother F-ing riot. I had 96 voicemails, Four hundred emails, and did nothing and I mean NA-Thing the first week, but have student conferences back to back all day. I mean the first one started at 6am the last one ended at 8:48pm. Once they realized I was back they flocked in, in pairs and trios! Some days there were quads!” Arial Couldn’t help but giggle a little. “I mean I had to hire not one but two student assistants just to handle and make appointment’s! I had a campus officer posted up out her for a couple weeks because people were fighting to get in here. Like legit hand to face fighting!”
“Sounds like you have had a wonderful month!” Arial said with sarcasm dripping from her lips. The ladies shared a hardy laugh, and it was oh so the medicine Shay needed.
“So Enough about me! How are you?! How’s everything? Please tell me everything I need some distraction in my life right now.” Shay pleaded.
“Isn’t that what you have a man for?” Arial quipped.
“Yes, but he’s gone, and I need fulfillment.” Shay playfully whined.
“Well I love you, but you are just going to have to wait to get fulfilled until he gets home missy.”
“Oh, shut up! You know what I mean. You big ol’kink get your mind out of the gutter.”
“I cant I have a permanent residency there. But I did manage to come out so I can give you a gift.”
Arial pulled a desk plate from her bag. It was Aqua blue and read: Shay Evans Dean Of Environmental and Earth Science Department.
“Arial I love it! Thank You!”
“I figured you would. Once I realized you weren’t at home relaxing like you should be. I figured you had come back to work.”
“I got bored of being at home by myself. So, I figured I would come do some paper work, check my emails, just drop in, and man am I glad I did. So, what have you been up to my ever so lovely maid of honor?”
“I.. have been seeing someone. I met him at the wedding and we have gone out a couple of times.”
Shay eyes went wide.
“Really??? Who is it??”
“His name is Jamie, Jamie Pike. He said he and Chris went to the same summer camp.”
“Oh yeah, I know Jamie he’s a sweet heart and super cute.”
“So you’re not mad?”
“Why would I be mad? It has been 3 years since Paul died. I know he wants you to be happy. So I’m going to support what you want...” Paul was Arial’s high school sweet heart who died while he was deployed. “… Plus Jamie has the stability that you need. He owns his own company, and he still has that bad boy feel to him. Plus his sons are the cutest.”
“So if you knew all of this why didn’t you try to set me up with him sooner??”
“Because you weren’t ready mentally. I could see it in your eyes. However, I was hoping you wouldn’t brush him off. I knew y’all would hit it off as soon as y’all started talking to each other.” A smile creeped on Shay’s face.
“Wait what??”
“I only made the seating chart for our table. You think I put him next to you by accident? I deliberately put him to the right of you. He’s a leftie I knew y’all would bump elbows sooner or later. I just didn’t think it would be between the sheets. Well at least not so quickly anyway.”
Arial took a blank piece of paper off of Shay’s desk, balled it up and threw it at her.
“Hey!” They giggled again this time at Arials expense.
“I really like him Shay. When I’m with him I just feel…”
“…Complete?” Shay offered.
Arial nodded. “His boys are amazing, I was first skeptical about meeting them so quickly but he insisted. And I don’t see myself without them in my life. Like I literally had to pry myself away from them to come see you. I need to know that I’m not crazy. I need to know that this isn’t too soon.”
“Now you know how I feel when I’m with Chris. Everyone’s relationship is going to go at the pace as both people dictate it to be. Chris and I were together in a matter of months as well. Jamie has been looking for a woman for a long time. I think you two are going to be just fine.”
“Really? I’m not going to fast?”
“I think you feel that way because you guys are moving fast. But that’s fine, as long as you remember to come up for air, and do this break way so you can reevaluate and get some perspective you’ll be fine. Also make sure you spend the night at home by yourself every once in a while. That will help too.”
Arial had tears coming down her face. Shay offered her a box of Kleenex this is what she needed. A friend to tell her it’s okay. “But I like staying with him and the boys. We have a routine.”
“I know, and I get that. But you are one, still paying rent on that apartment so you need to stay there at least a week a month. Two, it will give you time to catch up on all your nitty gritty tasks. Like calling people back, doing housework, It will also help with your independence. You still want to be whole and know who you are before you give yourself to them. I went through the same thing with Chris. I was essentially always with him or his family, and when I wasn’t I felt lonely and I missed him. Looking back now I’m happy as hell I did that. That me time was everything.”
“Okay so I need to spend some time away. It doesn’t have to be all at one time, right?”
“I’m not even saying that. I’m saying maybe have the kids spend the night at a friends house and y’all stay in your apartment that night. Not at his house. That way you can be back in your element and groove and he can see you like that. Plus it’ll be a nice change of pace. He will be the guest essentially. Just have that time for you. You can still do that when you are with him just make sure you don’t lose yourself in his world. Being married is about having two worlds come together not completely submitting into one or the other.”
“How the fuck did you get so wise so quickly?”
“My husband is a philosopher 80% of the time.” Shay giggled.
“And the other 20%?” Arial inquired.
“He’s a damn good fuck.”
“Ha! I can not fucking stand you!” Arial nearly fell out of her chair laughing.
Once they regained control of themselves Arial invited Shay to dinner.
“I wish I could but I have some late appointments. Tomorrow wanna do lunch?”
“Love too.”
The women stood up and had another embrace. Before breaking apart Shay whispered “I’m always here for you. For when you need these talks or just want to get away. You know that.” Arial nodded. They hugged once more and broke a part.
“Now get out of her I feel like we are in an episode of Full House with all this damn hugging.”
“Bye girl I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Thank you for my present and tell Jamie I said hey.”
“Will do muwah.”
“Muwah.”
Shays evening appointments had come and gone it was now almost 9:30 and she was wiped. Finishing up in the midst of filing she had yet another knock on the door. With her back turned facing the filing cabinet she invited the stranger in.
“Hi, How can I help you?”
“Well hello beautiful…” Shay turned to find her husband standing in her office with a vase off roses in his hand. “… Now how did I know that you would be here?”
“Because you know me.”
Shay went to embrace her husband. He moved to kiss her, and she welcomed him gladly.
“Gosh Damn I missed you.” He said briefly then recapturing her lips again.
Shay broke the kiss. “I missed you too.”
“Yeah?”
Shay nodded in agreement.
“I’m sorry I had to take off right after the wedding.”
“It’s cool. My department was in shambles. Which I have hopefully put back together. I’m almost ready go. Let me finish filing these last few papers and we can leave.”
Shay moved back to her filing cabinet trying to file the last few papers as quickly as possible. Chris however had other plans. He moved behind her and hugged her from his position. He kissed her neck and spoke softly into her ear. “Or we can hang here for a little while and christen this desk of yours?”
“Mmmm…As sexy and fun as that sounds I have been waiting eight weeks to finally make love to my husband. And dammit to hell we are having our first time in a bed.”
Chris giggled “Fine, but I will get you on this desk. Sooner or later.”
“I’m fine with that, but right now all I want is to make love in our brand-new bed. Because I’m ready for bed already. Also this desk is not comfortable to sleep on. Trust and believe.”
Shay shut the filing cabinet and adjusted her new name plate.
“Who brought you that? Wait let me guess Arial? How is she doing?”
She’s great! We are going to have lunch tomorrow. Oh and she has a new boyfriend.”
“Yeah Jamie told me.”
“Well your no fun.” Shay playfully stuck her tongue out at him.
Chris just giggled as he took her bag so she could lock her office door.
“Well he asked me if she was single, at the wedding. So I figured he went for it.”
“Oh yeah he did. I think they are going to be great.”
“Hell you should you sat them next to each other.”
“See I told you there was a method to my madness.”
