hm i need a topic. I’m going with, to absolutely NONE’S SURPRISE, les miserables.
Specifically the trend of white artists drawing exr and making Grantaire darker skinned than Enjolras. Or more broadly, making Jehan Prouvaire and Enjolras wayyyy light skinned than the rest of the amis. Like yeah yeah artistic liberty and whatever but like.
It sure is odd how the more graceful, pretty (canon or considered so by fanon) and well, more eloquent, in a manner of speaking characters are considered way more light skinned than Grantaire and Bossuet, who are by comparsion more crass at times. While I can’t be 100 percent sure for Bossuet, for I am yet to read more about his character and mannerisms, Grantaire is very clearly stated to be not conventionally attractive (or as some people say, ugly but that is a full discussion for another day), drunk and spectic.
And don’t get me wrong, Grantaire is a wonderful character but having the “drunk homely cynic”, to pick words from Hugo, himself, be consierably more darker skinned than the more idealistic and canonically called attractive amis (See Enjolras) sure does send a message, doesn’t it?
