A Thousand Years (Drabble for that nice Anon!)
*This is just sort of based off the song, not necessarily a direct line by line fic because that's just boring*
It was one of those nights where sleep refused to come for Eli. She paced her kitchen floor, her hands shaking like a junkie who'd gone too long without their vice.
Her heart felt as though it was going to beat out of her chest, and she felt the sudden urge to just break something. She grabbed a coffee mug and threw it against the wall, watching it shatter. That felt better... not much better, but at least a little.
Why did she have to start thinking of him now?
She frowned, walking over to the shattered cup, bending down to pick up the pieces. Who cares if she got cut? It's not like she'd get permanent damage from it; a scar was certainly out of the question.
Sometimes she hated being immortal.
Sometimes she hated having the "wisdom" that she did.
In all honesty, she only knew so much because she fucked up when she was younger.
She shook her head, picking up the rest of the shards and throwing them away. It would be inconvenient if she stepped on a piece and had to run around on it, because knowing her, she'd forget she'd stepped on a shard in the first place.
There were more important things she worried about.
She fell onto her couch; not having the energy to make it all the way back to her bedroom after throwing that mug. She felt pathetic, maybe she even was pathetic.
Maybe she was just tired.
She closed her eyes, her mind almost instantly taking her away into her dreams.
Maybe she should've just stayed awake.
She stood in her old home, her old cottage that she'd shared with her husband Arturo before he passed, and there he was, sitting on the bed they shared, looking as healthy as ever; so very different from the last time she saw him.
That was in the year 1352.
He gave her that shy smile, his grey eyes still holding that same warmth. Even his brown hair remained scruffy and uneven. Everything was just as she remembered; and that's what she feared.
"Elise... It's been a very long time." he softly said, standing. He was still taller than her too...
"I know you're not real. And I know this is a dream. You speak as though you're from the present." she pointed out weakly, trying to find an excuse for her mind to switch to another dream.
"I know... and I know we won't have long until you woke up. I just felt that now was the best time to talk to you." he smiled, stepping so he was in front of her. He carefully reached up; brushing her bangs out of her eyes, causing her to flinch.
"Why now?" she whispered, not able to bring her eyes to meet his. Too many memories rested withing those eyes... and she didn't care to relive them.
"I just wanted to check in on you... You see, I know you've been going through a hard time as of late, and I wanted to be sure you were doing alright. What with your work and all..." he pointed out, kissing the top of her head. She exhaled, closing her eyes.
"Living all these years without you."
It felt good finally saying it; even if it was subconsciously. It didn't really seem to matter how many decades went by; there were times when she was okay, but other times when crippling loneliness seemed to grab her heart and crush it between it's clutches.
"You must promise me something, my dear..."
Eli looked up to meet Arturo's eyes, her eyebrow raised in curiosity. He took a deep breath, then gave her a smile, causing her heart to flutter like it did all those years ago; back when she was a normal girl and knew nothing of the complications of the world.
"Promise me that you'll find happiness. If that means being with another, then so be it. I just want to see you smile like you used to." he softly said, his hands resting on her waist.
She frowned, taking a breath.
"Because... it's not as though I always feel this way... Sometimes I feel fine, as though I don't have much to worry about other than work, and as though nothing is weighing me down in my mind. Then there's the other times... where I don't see how I'd ever be able to go on without you, despite knowing that I've gone on without you for the past 661 years. But I know I can... I know I don't need you anymore. It's just... sometimes I want you." she softly said, almost ashamed for saying this.
Wasn't he her husband? Wasn't she obligated to never stray from that sense of loyalty to him?
"Things are much different now... And believe me when I say that I want you every single day, every hour... every minute. But that's not possible. I'm dead, and you've been blessed with eternal life. Don't hold back on my account." he said, grinning.
She rested her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes as he swayed them back and forth.
"I miss you. And I won't ever stop loving you." she said after a long while.
He held her a little bit tighter, kissing the top of her head again.
"And I, you. But I think it's time for us to finally part ways... in a fashion that leaves closure for the both of us." he murmured.
She could feel the tears burning her eyes, but she ignored them and gave him a hug. He was right, like always. It was time for her to move on, and for him to finally find the peace he much deserved.
"Goodbye, Arturo." she whispered.
"Goodbye, my dear, sweet Elise." he softly said, kissing her forehead one last time.
She awoke on her couch, with a blanket pulled over her and tears on her cheeks. In the armchair across from her sat her boss, his milky eyes looking blankly at her, his black hair somewhat obscuring their gaze.
"You were crying." he blankly said, picking up his teacup and taking a sip. She shook her head, her red hair tangled from sleep.
"Was it a bad dream?" he asked after she didn't say anything.
She was quiet for a long while, still feeling the soft pressure of Arturo's lips on her forehead.
"No," she finally said, looking at her boss, "I was just saying goodbye to someone I couldn't let go of."
"Is that so? So do you no longer love him?" he asked, tilting his head, his porcelain hands gently holding the teacup, stroking the flowered design on the side.
"No... despite the next thousand years... or even more, I won't ever stop loving him. And I most certainly won't forget." she answered, her green eyes softening as she spoke.
"I see then... well, you have a couple new jobs to take. Get dressed and we can discuss them." the man said, standing up and grabbing his cane. Eli watched him leave the room, listening to the tap of his cane as he made his way into her study.
She glanced out the window, the dawn sky beginning to show itself.
