Hmm, Selenite would have been my initial guess just glancing at it, but you're right, at closer inspection, it doesn't quite look correct.
I mean, it almost has the coloring of Desert Rose Selenite, but not the formation at all.

I have no idea, but at first I thought it was a hunk of wood.
Me too, but looking at photos of petrified wood, it doesn’t look anything like it. :/ At least not from what I’ve seen in google images.

Is it opaque? Brittle? How hard is it?
I’m guessing it’s opaque. It was described as “ not white at all, almost yellow in color when you look underneath” and “It's hard, pretty much the same consistency as quartz”
Also: “little pieces that are broken off, and the bottom are very shiney/sparkley to”
