Stripped of all that, wearing her grandmother’s gown with a braided crown and simple sandals, she knew she bore no resemblance to herself. That no one would ever connect the tiny princess at Hux’s side to the Supreme Leader of the First Order.

And she wanted it that way.

(That wasn’t true, she’d always need her mother and she was lucky in that her adopted mother was one of the best -- and had been the person to push her to see Artemis, to get closure). Itzel wouldn’t say this was how the Resistance treated their prisoners; in truth, no one knew she was down there. Probably because she had been told by Poe -- in no uncertain terms -- not to go anywhere near Hux. 

Clearly, she listened well. 

“Oh, most of them are. General Organa? She’s a frakking saint. But me? I can accept that I’m flawed. Especially if one of those flaws involves punching bitches like you in the face. I owe you. You and your mouth breathing troll of a boss. Not just for what he did to my brother but for the entire Hosnian system.”

“It does.” Though self-conscious about her height (and appearance) in front of the Order at large -- tucked away in Hux’s office or in either of their private quarters, she didn’t mind it so much. So the boots had been left the door -- along with the cowl, mask, and saber -- as she slid into the redhead’s lap.

“I’m bored and my scar hurts...” The last words she made sure to accompany with a pout, reminding her girlfriend once more that she had been hurt. Maimed by the nasty little scavenger. A worthless nobody that had stolen her grandfather’s saber...

She needed attention. And kisses.

If there was anyone who understood how Artemis felt, it was Breha. She might not have left a brother behind...but when Ben fell to the Dark Side, she hadn’t gone with him. Maybe if she had...maybe if she had been there with him, things wouldn’t have gotten this far. 

Maybe then her own father would still be there.

The guilt she felt? It was the same.  “He would have never gone with you; you know that. He was too far in. Had you tried...had you spent the time arguing with him, you wouldn’t have gotten out. But you’ll have your chance again. We both will.”
