And he was helpless to stop it.

Falkner’s eyes shoot open. Panting heavily, the young man’s eyes darted about his bedroom, trying to make sense of where he was. Only when he was certain that he was safe did he curl up on himself and allow the tears to fall. His sheets lay in a crumpled heap at the foot of his bed.

Bird…he had to check on his birds…

And yet he felt too overwhelmed to move. Clearly that mysterious, torturous anon yesterday had a greater power over him than he let on. Shaking vigiously, he heard the door to his bedroom open, and for a moment forgot that his mother was gone.

"…I had a nightmare…"
