hello! umm since you're interested in historical books/tv shows and you seem like an expert in that matter, I wanted to ask you which show or movie did you think they got the clothing right according to the era the show/movie was focused on? And if there's a show where you were disturbed by the misrepresentation fashion wise?
hello dear, and oh my god thank you! i’m no expert and i am usually driven by my taste in fashion so i may not be so reliable BUT i really like the borgias costumes; they were very well-made and i think very historically accurate because i’ve seen some renaissance paintings and they seemed - to me - quite similar. i liked the tudors costumes OVERALL; i don’t think tudor people wore so many tiaras as it is shown in the show but well, the clothes were pretty and somewhat appropriate.
what did i find terrible from the point of view of costumes? REIGN, OBVIOUSLY. reign is a big fat mess of vintage clothes, nightgowns and haute couture dresses
i don’t like the path the costumers have decided to follow. they said they wanted a sofia coppola vibe but LOL NO WHO ARE WE KIDDING? sofia coppola’s marie antoinette was PERFECT under every aspect: from the plot, the characters portrayals, to the costumes and the places etc etc. i loved every piece of clothing they have put on screen and i could watch that movie till the end of time because it’s flawless.
i also liked costumes from the six wives of henry viii ??? it’s an old movie or mini series - i don’t really remember - and women actually wore headdresses there (which is very rare on tv). in particular, i loved a cream/beige/grey dress jane seymour wore; i thought it was really well made and perfectly accurate.
i can’t think of anything else right now but— oh i liked the white queen costumes, even if people were not so fond of them. they were simple, yes, but i’ve found some of the clothes quite accurate for the period.
i’m probably forgetting tons of movie i’ve watched— OH OH MY GOD THE TWO ELIZABETHS. I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING IMPORTANT ONES. the first elizabeth is quite old, yes, but the costumes are so good and the coronation one is plainly based on one of the most famous portraits of elizabeth i, so accurate. elizabeth: the golden age is basically colour and costume porn transformed in a movie; the clothes cate blanchett wears in that movie oh. my. god. the golden ones are beautifully made, the white/cream ones, the light blue one she wears when she welcomes her child suitor– i could go on and on talking about those costumes because they are g o r g e o u s (and they got an academy award thanks to them, if i’m not mistaken).
ok now i really can’t think of anything else. i hope my answer made sense - i ramble too much i know - but yeah, i hope you're satisfied with what i've written :)
