Damn, watching the latest episode of Blackish about being mixed and understanding your identity hit WAAYYYY to close to home. I am a mixed American but will always see myself as black. I have always always been labeled black by society (and proud of it) and sometimes struggled to be accepted by my own peers from both races. So I, too, sometimes find myself struggling to understand who I am. I only recently found out a few months ago, for the FIRST time in my life, the possibile ethnic makeup of my background!! My mom and pops took DNA tests, and holy cow!!!! I am mixed AF! 😂 And for the first time EVER, I learned my African roots! I cried! It's beautiful really, and a stark reminder of why it's important to embrace being open to other cultures different than your own. I'll elaborate on another post because I digress... The new African American Museum in DC is an INCREDIBLE and worthwhile experience. I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn not only about your own culture, but others different from your own, as well (African American, Native American, asian, European, Indian, Middle Eastern, etc). You will laugh, cry, be overwhelmed and amazed. If you want to understand why black Americans feel marginalized and the way they do, this is an EXCELLENT place to start. We must do everything we can to preserve this history and educate others, as it is through EDUCATION we can have a foundation of understanding and a basis to finally learn to move forward. It is very clear that the African American experience is every much the American experience that a lot people are unfortunately uninformed about. Our history is a HUGE backbone to the infrastructure and history of the United States of America. Before you jump down my throat, do yourself a favor and educate yourself first. Spend the day here next time you're in DC and come with an open mind. You can't learn if youre not willing to be open and more importantly, to listen. You won't be disappointed....I'm still learning myself! 🙃 #educateyourself #LAgirlinDC #alwayslearning
