Dec 20, 2021- shellfish shucking shack on the shore of Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven -taken Dec 10, 2021

This little shack has been on this spot on Lagoon Pond for almost 100 years. Over those years it has survived many powerful storms, and at one point fell into terrible neglect, and almost rotted away completely.

The little shack has had various owners over the years. In its early years it was used as a studio by a man, a former sailor, who built miniature ship models in it. Later on it was used as a bait shack, and a shellfish shucking shack.

At one point the wife of a couple who owned it in the1950s, decided to decorate the little window box, changing it as the seasons changed. She kept this up until her death, after whichthe shack fell into a very fragile, and deteriorated condition.

Over the years peopleon the Island had become very fond of this little shack, and many artists used it as a subject to paint or photograph. Apparently some people, who were concerned that the shack might be lost forever if something wasn't done to repair it, reached out to the current owner, the son of the woman who had died, to offer help in restoring it. That finally happened a few years ago. His wife now tends the window box that his mother had taken care of for so many years.

Oct 13, 2021 - the sky one afternoon over Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven

I took this picture on Sept 29. I had stopped at the fish store to pick up fish for dinner, and on a whim decided to get some fried clams first. I hadn't had any all summer and now summer was over. If you live along the coast in New England it is kind of a summer requisite, that is if you like fried clams.

I was a bit shocked at the exorbitant price for the clams, but decided to get them anyway.

I took them across the parking area to this very nice quiet spot, where you could sit by the water. No people around, just the dramatic sky, and the sight and sounds of the seabirds as they flew in to light on the narrow spit of sandy beach that extended out into the pond. I thoroughly enjoyed the moment on that beautiful September afternoon...and the clams were pretty good also.

Dec 23, 2018 -the little fishing shack on the shore of Lagoon Pond -taken Dec 15, 2018

This shack has a long history. I am not sure when it actually was built, but apparently back in the 1930's it was being used by a man named Anton Svenson as a place for him to build ship models.Later it passed on to a fisherman named Sam Newcombe who used it to store his fishing gear, and used it as a place to shuck scallops.

In the 1950's it was bought by a man named Stuart Bangs. He owned it until he died. Apparently at some point, his wife Dorothy had asked him to add a window box to the shack, so she could fix it up a bit. She would put daffodils in the box in the spring, along with a scallop wreath on the door, and then at Christmas time, she would put an evergreen wreath on the door, and put Christmas greens in the flower box.She continued doing this for decades until her death in 2013.

By that time, the little shack was in a terrible state from all the many storms it had weathered. It looked like it would collapse onto itself at any moment, but was saved by the Bangs' son. Pail Bangs, who had been a commercial fisherman, and had used the shack himself in connection with his work, decided back in 2013to restore the little shack that was so loved by the Island community. Once restored, Paul's wife, Maggie, has taken on the task that Paul's mother had started so many years ago,of putting flowers or greens in the wwindow box, and a wreath on the door.
