On the first anniversary of his presidency, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te extended an olive branch to China, calling for dialogue based on reciprocal dignity and peaceful exchanges — but issued a powerful reminder: “Only by preparing for war can we avoid it.” As military tensions rise and Beijing continues its provocations, Lai reaffirmed Taiwan’s sovereignty, democracy, and the right of its 23 million people to decide their future. Despite being labeled a "separatist" by China, Lai offered peaceful cooperation but remained clear-eyed: Taiwan will defend itself if needed.
