Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.

I am far more delicate than you could possibly imagine. You need to move slowly.

AS ÁRVORES QUE DECIDIRAM NÃO MORRER
Enquanto deixo minha caneta de lado, sei que alguém, em
algum lugar, pega a própria caneta.
Title: Every Word You Cannot Say
Author: Iain S. Thomas
Rating: Two Stars
Goodreads Summary:
“*May this book find the person it needs to. May they find every word they were looking for.*
**I know you don’t want to talk sometimes. Sometimes because it hurts and sometimes because you’re just not supposed to talk about what you want to talk about. Sometimes it can be hard to say, “this is beautiful,” when no one else can see what you see. Or, “Here, this is where the pain is.” But some part of you knows, the truth about the words you cannot say is that they only hurt until you say them. They only hurt until the person who needs to hear them, hears them. Because we are human, and the closest we’ve ever come to showing each other who we really are, and how we love, is with words. So I’m going to try to say to you here, what I wish you’d say to me too. Please.
Listen. We can change things.”
I received the ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have mixed feelings on this collection. I like the appearance and intent behind the poems more than the poetry itself.
I liked the ideas Thomas expresses. I like how poems are arranged, for example one is shaped like a fish. The text coloring was unique. Asterisks are used creatively. The organization of the collection was great.
However, I didn’t like many of the poems. Poems often have vague imagery, which weakens the impact of the poetry. Filter words are abundant. A few poems contain cliches. Telling instead of showing is common. There’s two poems of one sentence repeated over and over. The best poems in the collection are the shortest.
With poetry I don’t enjoy on a technical level, like Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey, I sometimes still connect with the poet, because I’ve gotten to know this person and their experiences through their writing. In Every Word You Cannot Say, the poet is a blank slate. Even in the poems that aren’t addressing the reader, Iain S. Thomas never provides specific, personalized details.
While Every Word You Cannot Say contains good messages, the execution is lacking.
I never said apologise for how you feel. No one can control how they feel. The sun doesn't apologise for being the sun. The rain doesn't say sorry for falling. Feelings just are.
