Lake Itasca and the headwaters of the Mississippi
MBS 856 1947 date Lake Itasca Minnesota
I don’t care if you didn’t follow for pictures of trees, that’s what you’re getting. In other words, I’m back from Itasca state park.
Managed to squeeze in a little bit of hiking, some kayaking, and plenty of biking, and a hurried plein air that I will upload later. I’ve got plenty of things waiting for me on my plate, but it’s been so nice to get away, despite everything that’s been happening (severe drought, environmental damage, etc).
Not shown: quite a bit of wildlife, including several loons that surfaced alarmingly close to our kayaks.
Hard to believe this is the start of the mighty Mississippi River! Lake Itasca, Minnesota. The Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains!
Happy September! I can’t wait to get started on fall recipes and baking...

This illustration by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft depicts the source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca, which lies in the north-central part of present-day Minnesota. Schoolcraft led an expedition to the Mississippi’s source in 1832.
