Does Kenya prefers politics over education?
Kenya is one of the mismanaged country, with the political class allocating billions of money to run a political agenda, pupils and students learn under very harsh conditions with the environment dangerous as crossing a massive crocodile and hippo infested over flooded Lake Baringo that has already claimed a number of live.
Recently, a boat ferrying a number of family members to Rokwa Island in Lake Baringo, sunk claiming three lives, among them a youth and a 1 year old baby.
The lake flooded from for the better part of the beginning of 2020 affecting residents who had settle around it and owned the pieces of land for decades, schools too were submerged together with social amenities, living a large population helpless and starting to build a new life elsewhere.
Leaders from the vast Baringo County are said not to offer much support, with the county being among the most ilitrate amongst the 47 counties in Kenya.
The countries top leadership has been silent and not much being done by them, with the locals having to dive and retrieve bodies of the dead whenever the unfortunate happens.
Recently, Kenya resumed learning after about ten months as the country tried to control the spread of the corona virus.
The disturbing scene is that of young people having to use boats to get themselves to school, pupils of Loruk primary school in Baringo North sub county, paddled to school in poorly made makeshifts, lucky enough their school was just cutoff by floods and not submerged.
The flooding at Lake Baringo one of the five fresh water lakes in Kenya and agreat tourist destination, affecyed 18 schools, with some schools experiencing a low turn up of pupils and students in the area.
This comes even as the area leaders have allowed the students from submerged schools to be accommodated in any safe schools around.
According to a GIS expert Joseph Kinyanjui, the situation was experienced about sixty years ago and is likely to remain permanent for a while.
Other flooded lakes in Baringo County, are Lake Bogoria, a salty water lake and Lake 94.
This also comes as the education sector agrees to triple fees to university students. A move that seems to have been agreed upon by university leadership.
This is a sad move as the economy of scale is in favour of the students from able families, living the students from humble backgrounds voiceless.
