Chicago FC United v Christos FC - US Open Cup 3rd Round
The magic of the cup. The romance. Insert any old hoary cliche you want. Truth is there is nothing like cup football. And whilst the US soccer authorities continue to treat the Lemar Hunt trophy with disdain, the clubs and fans involved in the less glamorous early stages are still enthralled by the old thing.
Tonight, two part-time teams played out a cracking game in front of a good couple of hundred of fans, for the right to travel to DC and stand toe-to-toe with some of MLS’ finest. Exactly the sort of reward that cup football can give you.
With the sun blinding all onlookers, Christos wasted no time in staking their claim for glory. A long throw from the right bobbled around the six yard box before being swept home by Houpeli. This wasn’t the start the home side wanted, and it certainly silenced a group of fans on loan from their big city MLS neighbors.
FC were not to be outdone though. They pushed and probed, and forced Christos to defend deeper and deeper. Chris Mueller, wearing 8, fresh from a trial in Germany, was orchestrating much of the best play for Chicago, but was keen to do as much as he could, often to the detriment of a simpler pass. And as Chicago pushed, Christos used their pace to fight back on the break..
On 31 Christos thought they had doubled their lead, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The small band of travelling fans were incredulous, but video footage showed the call to be correct.
FC had a series of freekicks in good positions, taken by Mueller but which ultimately were wasted. With the height of Serakowski and De Brujine a natural target in all set pieces, getting the ball past the first man, or over any wall, should be the most basic of objectives.
As half time approached, Albrecht latched on to a flick on and bore down on the FC goal. Jackman stood tall and large, however, and kept him out. On 43, Mueller dazzled the visiting defence with some lovely tight control, before lashing the ball goalward. The fierce shot was spilled, and ultimately cleared

Christos threatened to start the second half as they started the first, but a speculative shot was easily saved by Jackman. FC went straight down the other end, with the pacey Gonzalez putting a dangerous ball right across the 6 yard box, with no one on the end of it for a tap in.
Mueller then unleashed an almighty piledriver from 30 yards out, which Saunders in the Christos goal did well to tip over.
On 56 minutes, Jackman tried one too many touches from a backpass, and was nearly robbed, only to be saved by some desperate defending.
This was a problem that blighted FC throughout the night. Technically gifted, they sought to play their fancy “street soccer when a better-schooled football mind would find a team mate with a simple pass. Little flicks, passes with the outside of the boot, trying to beat the man one time too many. This young team are gifted, no doubt. But they lack game nous, Christos on the other hand were hapy to let FC play around them, and wait for the moment of lax control to repel the danger. They had a game plan, and it worked.
As we moved in to the final half hour, Segbers beat a couple of Christos defenders, before firing straight at Saunders.
Christos were beginning to tire, and FC could smell blood. The visitors threw on some fresh legs in a bid to tighten up their defence. As the new bodies settled in, FC twice went close in a matter of seconds, as first Mueller and then Serakowski forced smart saves out of Saunders. It was beginning to look like Lady Luck was smiling on the boys from Maryland.
80 minutes, and FC had a good shout for a penalty turned down, as more good work down the left was ended abruptly with a strong challenge. Referee Rebecca Pagan, who had at times been let down by her officials tonight, waved away strong protests from the home side, and a chorus of heckles from the increasingly fraught home bleachers.
Christos hit back, and a defensive misunderstanding nearly let them in for a game-winning second goal. As it was, a desperate lunge from man mountain De Brujine saved everyone’s blushes.
With the clock winding down, FC threw everything they had at the Christos goal. Jackman went up for a corner. Some tidy work from Mueller put a teammate through on goal, only for Saunders to foil the attack yet again.
When referee Pagan blew for full time, Christos celebrated as they were entitled to do This had been a great game of football. FC had thrown everything they could at the visitors goal, and nothing got past them. Christos ‘keeper Phillip Saunders was named Man of the Match by the Christos Twitter feed, and it is hard to argue. For FC, Mueller was stand out for his creativity, and had the result been different, he would have received many plaudits.As it was, his selfishness, or lack of faith in his teammates, possibly cost FC this match.

Much has been written prior to this game about Christos’ unique set-up, and many more words and pictures will be devoted to them in the coming weeks. Theirs is certainly the Cinderella story of this year’s tournament, and long may it continue.
