Five years ago I made an intimate documentary on @lalamichmich and her husband @RickOwens for @anothermag. I went into the project a little naively; Rick Owens furniture = Rick Owens, right? I swiftly learned that Michele was just as much driving the creation of the collection, if not more. She was and remains in love with the tactile process of making goods and the artisans that create, with the nature of physical property and bringing life and shape from it. She took me to every nook and cranny of that city and its suburbs meeting the makers that she had found. Spending time with Michele, one realizes her singular nature: she is not motivated by trend, she foregoes norms, she lives on instinct, and charges forward with total confidence. She has always boxed for fun and fitness, but as of late taken on a deeper meaning for her, and is at the core of #LamyLand featured now at Selfridges in London. In Michele’s words: “The idea of the underdog and a code of rules. That you learn to concentrate and look someone in the eye. You fight, but you follow rules. I think in today’s political climate you can see it as a metaphor.
