Crushes sucked on their own, but when they were on your best friend they were far worse, Michael had discovered. He hated that his stomach would flip when Ray gave a particularly large smile, or when he laughed loudly for once. It was a rare treat, and Michael was a sucker for it. It was almost embarrassing how much it improved his day.
So, when he met up with him outside the school gates at the end of the day and saw Ray grinning, it was no surprise that he briefly felt butterflies. By the time he’d reached Ray’s side, he’d firmly squashed them down so he could successfully keep his mask up. “What’s got you in such a good mood?” Michael asked, an eyebrow quirked.
