Repost from @sonomaopenspace A wonderful example of what a conservation easement can do is the protection of the 19,000-acre Cooley Ranch in 2001. This property could have been developed for 56 housing sites that would have required a complex network of roads and utility infrastructure, and would have resulted in substantially greater carbon emissions due to vehicles traveling to and from these remote home sites. Instead, as a result of the conservation easement, Cooley Ranch is home to grazing cattle, vineyards, oak woodlands, and key wildlife migration corridors. It also protects over a quarter of the Lake Sonoma watershed, which is integral to the entire county’s water supply.
