Australian 🇦🇺 Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) soldiers taking a rest in the shade of their Land Rover Perentie Long Range Patrol Vehicle (LRPV)

The LRPV was first deployed to Kuwait in 1998 for Operation Desert Thunder, and first saw combat as part of the Australian contribution to the War in Afghanistan, Operation Slipper and later in Iraq in Operation Falconer.

The SASR’s 1 Squadron arrived in Afghanistan in November 2001, and rapidly sent LRPV-mounted patrols hundreds of kilometers from their base at Camp Rhino. In his history of the SASR’s early operations in Afghanistan, journalist Ian McPhedran wrote that the “Australian-designed LRPVs would prove ideal in the harsh Afghan environment, as they could stay on patrol for weeks on end without needing to return to base”.

The LRPV served with distinction until it was replaced by the Supacat HMT vehicles and ADI Bushmasters starting in 2008-2012.

"Another piece I did during the research for ‘They Found Our Engineer’ back in 2009/10. How did the long wheel base Land Rovers originate as the 107” in 1954? This question came about when interviewing Arthur Goddard and he mentioned that the first prototype long wheel base wasn’t 107” but shorter. We sort of knew that this first vehicle (shown here) was obviously shorter in the photo. The only other clue from the time was an odd draft drawing of the rear of a 104” Land Rover chassis. But the real question was how do you get from 104” to 107”. Unfortunately Arthur couldn’t recall. The clue ended up being in the dimensions of the 86” and how they added to the vehicle 3” to the rear chassis spring mount and 3” in the rear spring over an 80”. So simply put the 86” rear spring dimensions on the 104” and you get 107”! So the original idea for a long wheel base Land Rover was to simply put 24” onto 80”. I love these old photos, especially the prototype vehicle from 1949/50 with its deluxe Cab.
