okay, I'll agree to disagree on this one. Yes, old white men are constantly oppressing minorities, and white privilege is real and racism against PoC is very, very real. but I don't want to devalue the struggle and oppression white Jews, eastern European Muslims, Romas and more have experienced (at the hands of other white oppressors) by saying that all White people are oppressors. I'm not, and i fully support the peaceful protesters in Ferguson.
If it seemed like I was devaluing or delegitimizing the prejudice and discrimination of subcultures within the Caucasian race, then I apologize as that does not properly convey the way I feel about their mistreatment. However, there was a post that I reblogged a couple days ago that talked about why “not all white people” or “I’m white, but I’m not racist” are counter-progressive on the fight for equal treatment of PoC. I’m not able to retrieve a link since I’m on mobile, but it should be under “this is so important.” Take a look at it if you can. PoC recognize that not all white people are racist or oppressive.
Do people just choose to forget what happened in Europe a half a century ago? or is it just plain ignorance? Anti-Semitism is Racism. can give you 6 million examples why, which includes my grandparents' entire families. Don't lecture me on what racism is, I've spent my entire life learning about how peoples' hatred for those who are different can gas and burn millions. I have experienced racism; being called a kyke, having swastikas drawn on my school, bomb and death threats. do not devalue that
I’m not dismissing anything that Jewish people went through with the Holocaust or the anti-Semitism that exists today. I acknowledge that discrimination and bias towards people because of their Judaism, again, still exists. However, with that said, white Jewish people are able to benefit from white privilege which is at the cost of the lives and rights of PoC. White people cannot experience racism because PoC do not possess the power to oppress and marginalize them. Anti-Semitism can apply to PoC that also practice Judaism as Judaism isn’t a religion or culture exclusive to those of Caucasian descent. Whereas racism cannot apply to white Jews as, again, they benefit from white privilege and have access to the power to oppress and marginalize PoC.
blurg, I don't want to make a scene or take away at all from the very important points being made about racism in america right now, but I am white, and I have experienced racism. Racism because of my Judaism, and that same discrimination because of my sexual preference. I agree that white people do not experience racism solely based on our skin colour, but I have come face to face with hate-based discrimination so I get irked when you say white people cannot experience racism
Discrimination against your religion =/= racism. Discrimination against your sexuality =/= racism. If white people do not experience discrimination based solely on their skin color, then they do not experience racism. Discrimination against your religion as a Jewish white male is prejudice. Discrimination against your sexuality is homophobia, another form of prejudice. But your experience with both is not equivalent to, for example, the injustice black Muslims experience or the injustice gay PoC experience. It helps you to better understand the discrimination PoC experience, but it is not the same. Because even as a gay white male, you are still more privileged than, say, a gay black male. By equating the discrimination you’ve experienced with racism, you negate and delegitimize the oppression and struggles of PoC and even more so for those of non-Catholic/Protestant faiths or non-heterosexuals. By equating the discrimination you’ve experienced with racism, you equip disbelievers, skeptics, and ignoramuses with the ability to compare your treatment and the treatment of PoC and say “stop complaining, it’s not that bad,” or “these PoC are just entitled and want more rights, not equal rights.” Why? Because of the privilege you were born into because of the color of your skin. Because of the system that white people benefit from, knowingly or unknowingly, through the oppression of PoC.
