工 /gōng/ is a part of words:

工作 /gōngzuò/ WORK, TO WORK 工人 /gōngrén/ WORKER 工业 /gōngyè/ INDUSTRY 工厂 /gōngchǎng/ FACTORY

I think that it is quite self explanatory :)
