Re that latinx post. I've been wondering how do those of us outside a group navigate these divisions? I like latinx for its inclusivity the same way I like queer but I wonder how to address people from the community asking me not to use a term when the people I know use it?? In individual conversation it's easy enough to adjust but if I make a post about latinx people and have to defend my choice as a white person it seems sticky?
i feel you on this, my friend. I have been asked to use it by members of the community, and asked not to use it by members of the community--and I am not a member of the community in question. Generally when folks ask me not to use it I agree not to use it with them specifically, but I also let them know that since trans folk and gnc folks within the community have supported its use for reasons of inclusion, that when speaking generally or publicly I will continue using the term. I may also natter (a regrettable tendency, but apparently inevitable in me) about how communities are not monoliths, and that language adapts to lived experience, and that generally, when marginalized folks ask me to please include them, I'm gonna do that thing.
